New Pittsburgh Bike Map Launch Party
The first on-street bike map in 15 years! A call for celebration!

Join us to celebrate this momentus occassion on Friday, November 2, 7-10 pm

pittsburgh bike map coverAfter a fifteen-year wait, Pittsburgh cyclists have in their hands something that cyclists from other cities take for granted, a bicycle map. Pittsburgh's "bowl-of-spaghetti" street layout makes it difficult to get around, so newer residents and cyclists ride the larger, arterial roads, which are usually poor for cycling. The back streets are quite pleasant, so the map, created by Bike Pittsburgh, is designed to help cyclists find the best alternative route to traverse our myriad neighborhoods.

Cool National News: State of Illinois Passes "Complete Streets" into law
Becomes the first state to pass bicycle and ped friendly legislation

complete streetsThe national complete streets movement has some good news to report.  In near-unanimous votes, the Illinois House and Senate have overridden a gubernatorial veto to adopt a statewide complete streets law.

The new law requires the Illinois Department of Transportation to include safe bicycling and walking facilities in all projects in urbanized areas, and is a victory for the movement to create complete streets that serve the needs of all road users. It is effective immediately for project planning and required in construction beginning August 2008.

"The law is a very cost-effective way to improve safety and access for bicyclists and pedestrians," says Randy Neufeld, Chief Strategy Officer for the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation. "In the past, the state was prompted by death or injury to correct unsafe conditions on a given project. This law requires projects be built correctly the first time, which will save taxpayers' money and protect people."

Logging Your Bicycling Complaints is as Easy as 3-1-1
Non-emergency Response Line is a great way to make your bicycling concerns known

Always have to swerve to avoid that dangerous pothole? Cars going way too fast on a certain stretch of road? Is the lack of a safe on-street connection into Oakland from Downtown getting you down? Call 311!

311 isn't a magic bullet, but it does create a paper trail and complaints will get sent to the appropriate department to be addressed. It's easy, and only takes a minute of your time. Personally, we've had a decent amount of success with 3-1-1 especially getting dangerous potholes repaired and having debris removed from trails.

If you want to go the extra mile and you have a specific need that should be addressed in the neighborhood in which you live, don't be shy - Contact your Councilperson.
