October 5th: Alternative Transportation Fest
|
|
Join us for Pittsburgh's first annual Alternative Transportation Festival (ATF)
on October 5th! We are partnering with over 40 organizations to show
you how easy the choice can be to incorporate alternative forms of
transportation and fuels into your life.
The Fest is located in three locations throughout the city: Market Square, Schenley Plaza, and SouthSide Works. We are still in need of a handful of volunteers for the South Side and Market Square locations. If you can volunteer during the day on October 5th, please contact scott@bike-pgh.org for more details.
Bike programming:
» Bike Pittsburgh will be giving away our brand new Pittsburgh Bike
Map and 100 Planet Bike blinkie lights (split amongst the three locations so get there before
supplies run out!)
» Free Ride will have mechanics available at SouthSide Works and Schenley Plaza
so you can ask them questions on how to fix things on your
bike and how to perform a safety check.
» Free showers downtown! YMCA of Pittsburgh's Downtown location will be graciously opening up its facilities for bike commuters that day to use its showers and lockers FREE OF CHARGE! Just mention "Bike Pittsburgh," and they will point you to the silver locker rooms. » There will be "how to fix a flat" workshops at REI in the SouthSide Works throughout the day
» Friends of the Riverfront will be showcasing their Free Community Bike program. Sign up and take a spin!
For more information about the event and to check out a complete list of our partners, please visit the ATF webstie » The idea emerged from Engage and is being funded by the Sprout Fund. Steel City Biofuels and Bike Pittsburgh are the co-hosts of the event.

Birmingham Bridge is Getting Bike Lanes!
|
|
The making of a bike lane
Cyclists using this popular commuting route, that connects the
neighborhoods of the Southside, Oakland, the Hill, Uptown, and
Downtown, will be in for a surprise when the Birmingham Bridge reopens.
During it's partial closure in PennDOT's rehabilitation work, Bike
Pittsburgh met with PennDOT officials to discuss bicycle improvements.
Check out the results as they unfold with our daily coverage!

Action Alert: Neville St in Serious Disrepair
|
|
Call/write 3-1-1 and Council District 8
Neville Street in Oakland, which serves as a major thoroughfare for
cyclists accessing the Panther Hollow Trail and Eliza Furnace Trail, is in desperate need of resurfacing, a shoulder, and traffic calming. Please call 3-1-1 and Councilman Peduto to kindly request that this street be made more bike friendly.
Please visit our website for photos and more info.

Action Alert: Demand a Safe Route to Oakland
|
|
Don't force us onto Forbes Ave - It's a Death Trap!

There are no safe bicycling routes into the heart of Oakland from Downtown that are viable year round. Forbes Ave is too dangerous, Panther Hollow Trail is officially closed at dusk and barely maintained in the winter, and using the bus lane on Fifth is illegal. This leaves the sidewalk next to the bus lane our only alternative. This sidewalk could be a multi-use path since it isn't a business district. However, the sidewalk is in complete disrepair. And here's the kicker - a used car dealership currently parks its cars on it! Help get this potential "Bridge to Oakland" repaired and made into a safe route into Oakland. Read more about this connection and what you can do about it on our website.

Logging Your Bicycling Complaints is as Easy as 3-1-1
|
|
Non-emergency Response Line is a great way to make your bicycling concerns known
Always have to swerve to avoid that dangerous pothole? Cars going way too fast on a certain stretch of road? Is the lack of a safe on-street connection into Oakland from Downtown getting you down? Call 311!
311 isn't a magic bullet, but it does create a paper trail and complaints will get sent to the appropriate department to be addressed. It's easy, and only takes a minute of your time. Personally, we've had a decent amount of success with 3-1-1 especially getting dangerous potholes repaired and having debris removed from trails. If you want to go the extra mile and you have a specific need that should be addressed in the neighborhood in which you live, don't be shy - Contact your Councilperson.
