The Travelling Chef Kelly is on the road again!  Greetings from the Colorado Mountains!

I am just finishing my annual trip to Aspen/Snowmass and I hate to leave.  The sky is brillant blue and the sun is shining and the skiing will be fabulous.  Oh well, I had many other days just as beautiful, so I'd better not complain.  I wish you could have been with me riding high up the chair lift and looking down at the glistening snow, undisturbed except for animal footprints between the trees.  It was so quiet, we had the mountain to ourselves and it was almost meditative.  What a great way to relax!

Aspen food markets are filled with anything you could desire, we have been getting delicious red grapefruit, bluberries, fresh Halibut and Cod, beautiful vegetables and fresh herbs to work with.  When we did go out to dinner it was hard to choose from the varied and inventive menu items. At Gusto, an Italian spot, I had my favorites, beef carpaccio, washed down with a velvety Barbera d'Asti, followed by linguine with clams! My friend and host, Mary Schubert, had a decadent ricotta filled ravioli with basil sauce!  The wines we wre trying in general were
wonderful.  We found a 2005 Merlot by Columbia Crest, Grand Reserve that was a great value and smooth and rich.  One white I loved was a 2006 Sauvignon Blac by Oberon in the Napa Valley, beautiful and crisp. We also tried a Spanish wine from Calatayud, in Aragon, Atteca, I think it was a garnacha, very, very good too!
But as all good things come to an end, I Fed Ex'd my skis home yesterday evening and to day I am off to work again.  This time to Las Vegas! Las Vegas Casinos  I've never been there and I am a little bit hesitant about all of that glitz and glamour, but I have already been checking out the restaurant menus on line to see what they're doing new and different. My fellow chef friend Victor Gechrit of Chicago recommended Michael Mina's new place, Skirtsteak. Victor's friend Steve Hau is the sommelier so I will be in good hands! I will actually be attending the Catersource and Event Planners 2009 Convention.  Classes start at 7:00am and don't stop until 6:00pm followed by evening events, so I'll have more to report later!  In the meantime don't miss our Mardis Gras Party on Thursday night!!
