PRESIDENT'S CORNER

From Jessica Broitman
9 & 10 Funston Ave, The Presidio

We are finally about to sign a new five year lease at the Presidio, thanks in large part to the hard work on the part of the building committee, led by Karen Hubble. We believe we will have two beautiful very large offices to rent. They have lovely features such as fireplaces and bay windows. We would love to have you in our community. Please spread the word to any of our members, or those who might want to join. Let Rob at the office know if you are interested in seeing the available offices. Click on the Presidio image to go to our website where you can email Rob for more information. Read On

RESEARCH CORNER

From Marshall Bush

Dear SFPRG members and friends, I am working on a manual that will lay out the principles of control- mastery.

Please send me your ideas on the following 2 topics:

1) How would you categorize the different types of traumas patients try to master in psychotherapy?

2) How would you categorize the various activities patients engage in besides testing?

Please email me your thoughts. Thank you very much. Marshall Bush (drmbush@pacbell.net) .

June represents the beginning of summer, a time when things quiet down around SFPRG. Lots of housekeeping occurs as we try to get ready for our very full fall/spring schedule. We begin preparing a new budget and lay down plans for the educational activities for the next year.

This year's Post-License Training Program has come to its end and it was, by all accounts, a resounding success. The course will be repeated starting in the fall. Also, because our Introduction to Control-Mastery class is selling out before the March Workshop each year, we have decided to offer it in the fall as well - please let your colleagues and supervisees know!

The intern training schedule is created and supervisors are lined up for next year. We read through all of your evaluations very carefully and try to think of ways to incorporate your suggestions. We appreciate all of your feedback and are hoping to continue to grow into an organization that you are proud to be a member of and will want to participate in!

We are also getting ready to say goodbye to the interns who are moving on. This year we will launch Terri Roberson, Alexandria Leedy and Michelle Skeen. Luckily, they will all be in practice in the area and welcome your referrals. We are beginning a series of articles that will follow what has happened to our 33 past interns. Our first report coming soon will be from Barbara Maura who was in our second class. Have a great summer and see you in the fall!

Cont'd: FYI

Hello everyone! My name is Bárbara Moura. I am a graduate of the Wright Institute and did my internship year in 2002-2003 at SFPRG. I was introduced to Control Mastery theory my first year as a graduate student and have used it ever since as my clinical foundation. Throughout my training I have worked in community mental health and have been confronted with the incredible daily challenges that clients face stemming from trauma, poverty, addiction, and mental illness.

A strong clinical foundation in Control Mastery theory has allowed me to hold onto the belief that every individual strives towards health, despite the destructive or self-defeating behaviors so often observed in therapy.

A thorough understanding of testing behaviors has allowed me to understand how to be the most helpful to clients in session and how to coach couples and families to understand and respond to each other.

Presently, I am directing the outpatient department at the Hume Center in Concord and use Control Mastery theory daily in the supervisory process. I am opening my private practice in Oakland and welcome any referrals. Please do not hesitate to call me or write me an email with any questions!

My name is Joy Misra and I am moving to the Bay area in August. I have my M.S. in Counselor Education from Portland State University and will be starting a Clinical Psych. program at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology this fall.

I want to start getting my hours towards licensure as an MFT. My intern supervisor gave me the SFPRG website to check out as a possible resource for getting connected to someone who might be able to supervise me, as well as network with other practitioners. I am currently at the YWCA in Portland, where we have a control mastery theoretical bent.

My connection to SFPRG is my supervisor, Adrienne Wolmark, at the YWCA in Portland OR, is trained in control mastery theory and utilizes it as the grounding approach from which we work.

Each year, a few students at my internship site go to the SFPRG annual conference and share what was learned while there. I find control mastery to be non-pathologizing and a secure base to spring from with clients. I am hoping to find a supervisor and an office space through SFPRG so that I could continue working from that framework.

I am interested in renting office space, either hourly, or for a day or two a week. I will probably be living near Palo Alto, as that is where my program is, although I am open to anywhere in the Bay area too, as I may be commuting from SF or Oakland!

Thanks, Joy
