December 2008

Greetings!
Winter Solstice. Christmas. Yule logs burning. Merrymaking. Mistletoe. Halls decked with boughs of evergreens. Gift giving.
The winter solstice is the pivot, or turning point of the year when the shortest day and longest night occur on December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere. It heralds the slow return of the sun with it's warmth and light as the days begin to lengthen. The ancient Romans called it Dies Natalis Invicti Solis, Birthday of the Unconquered Sun.
There is rich and colorful history connected with this time of year. To ancient people the gloomy winter solstice was fraught with dread when the lack of heat and light and limited food supply were serious survival issues. The celebrations that spun around this cold and dark season were intended to brighten their lives with warmth, light, and cheer. One such celebration was the Scandinavian Yule. Great yule logs were burned and people gathered around the bonfire to drink mead and listen to minstrel-poets sing ancient legends. They believed the yule log had the magical effect of helping the sun to shine more brightly. The Romans decked their halls with boughs of evergreen, symbolizing life's continuity. Friends visited one another and gave gifts.
Today, we have our holiday feasts and festivals with twinkling lights, evergreens, gift giving, and burning yule logs in the fireplace, reflecting our connections with the distant past. We also suffer from a lack of light and sun this time of year. Modern science has even given a name to the winter dread or depression. They call it SAD, or seasonal affective disorder. A modern name for an age old condition.
More than anything, people gathered "together" during this time to offer goodwill and friendship to one another. Love seemed to ward off the dark and cold. In our culture today, many people live separate lives, away from family and often living alone. We've gotten far away from our roots of tribes and extended families. All of the historical rituals and celebrations for midwinter have similar threads of meaning, one of which is goodwill and love.
Many things have changed down through history. One thing hasn't. The need for all of us as human beings to have light, love, and each other. May your holiday season be filled to overflowing with these blessings.
With Joy and Love

AHC Patient Kate Lonis Runs Nike's Women's Marathon
|
The Nike's Women's Marathon and Half Marathon for 20,000 women runners was held in San Franscisco, CA benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, October 19, 2008.
Vicki Hall, also a patient of Dr. Franklin's, ran the half marathon.
Here's what Kate had to say about her experience: Dr. Franklin and Absolute Health Chiropractic were instrumental in me finishing my very first marathon. I have always wanted to run a marathon and signed up for the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco in October. I had been following a rigid training program but found myself sore and "out of whack' from so much running. Seeing Dr. Cathy routinely helped me to keep in running form and maintain my training program, to realize my goal of running 26.2 miles. I completed the race in grand fashion... getting the coveted Tiffany's necklace at the finish line!!! Thanks Dr. Cathy!!! With great appreciation, Kate Lonis Top of Page
