Forward Movement of the Chiropractic Profession
|
According to an article in the April 2008 issue of the Chiropractic Journal, a "Sense of Congress" bill was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives on February 13 calling for the commissioning of doctors of chiropractic as health care officers in the Armed Forces.
"Sense of Congress" bills allow the recommendations to go into official Congressional records but don't create or amend laws and are not enforcement.
There has been a decades long effort by the chiropractic profession to introduce legislation that would allow commissioning of chiropractors as health care officers. This legislation would put chiropractors on par with other health care providers in the medical and dental fields in the Armed Forces.
After considerable effort by World Chiropractic Alliance and other chiropractic organizations, the Defense Authorization Amendment of 1992 was passed providing the Secretary of Defense the authority to commission DC's as health care officers. Military policy was never changed, however.
The introduction of the "Sense of Congress" bill in February of this year is part of the ongoing effort of the chiropractic profession to end such discrimination. The International Chiropractic Association believes that military personnel should have access to the widest possible range of health care options, including non-pharmaceutical options such as chiropractic.
Here at Absolute Health Chiropractic, we see the benefits of chiropractic healing every day in our patients. We believe that our military deserves access to those benefits. We applaud the efforts of the chiropractic associations that are working so hard to provide chiropractic care to our military.
