Commentary:
What Was Your First
Paying Job?
"What was your first paying job?" is the question posed during a webinar sponsored by Manpower and led by Mel Kleiman. The topic of the session was Behavioral Interviewing: The Next Evolution. The question was interesting, but the follow-up question really hit home and gave me reason to think. That question was "What lessons did you learn from the experience?"
When a recruiter is interviewing an applicant using behavioral interviewing techniques, the story behind the answer is the real test. Think about how differently the recruiter might look at you, depending on your answer. The story you share will tell how you face problems, overcome obstacles, learn lessons or take on responsibility. If you can look at your first job not only as a means to earn some spending money, but also as a learning opportunity about the world of work, you could move to the top of the list in the eyes of the recruiter. My first paying job was babysitting the neighborhood kids. I learned a lot of different things, like responsibility, patience, creativity, leadership, and on one occasion, how to handle an emergency. Because of my babysitting experiences, I could come up with a number of examples to tell a recruiter that might demonstrate that I have the various skills they need for their position. Ask your students or your own kids, "What was your first job and what lessons did you learn from it?" Get them to think about the different activities they are involved in, paying or not, and start a conversation about lessons learned. Asking yourself, "What did I learn from that experience?" is a good habit to start and is a valuable way to look at life and your career path.

Do You Have a Van You Can Donate to Vital Link?
Our organization needs a van to transport the equipment we use during our Career Exploration programs and Advisory Board events. As the organization grows and the number of programs we provide throughout the county increases, it becomes more and more difficult for us to transport all of the props and equipment we use. Sound equipment, projectors, chairs and tables, props and displays are among the many items that are transported in the back seats of our staff and volunteers cars. If you, or someone you know, has a commercial van to donate to Vital Link, you would become one our heroes! Please Contact Vital Link at 949-646-2520 or email Helen@vitallinkoc.org.
Thank you for your support!

Portfolio Curriculum Impacts Students
The popular Personal Portfolio Curriculum and Pocket Portfolio tool are impacting students throughout California. Over the past school year, schools located in Folsom, Cordova, Riverside, Monterey, Los Angeles, Tustin, Sacramento, Apple Valley (and more) are using the curriculum to help their students learn how to document their soft skills in a way that is meaningful and credible to employers. The Portfolio curriculum provides students with training in some of the most important skills employers require for their new employees. If you are interested in acquiring the curriculum for your students or would like to make a donation to provide the curriculum to a school of your choice, please contact Vital Link at 949-646-2520 or Kathy@vitallinkoc.org.
