U.S. Jews and Latinos form unlikely bond over immigration policy

Found in The Forward
Written by Nathan Guttman

Last update - 20:41 31/01/2010

Even as health care reform twists in the wind, immigration policy looms as the next big political debate, and Hispanics and Jews are moving to the forefront in a burgeoning political alliance.

The next three months are seen as critical in the fight for immigration reform, but the weakening of the Democrats, grip on Congress with the recent loss of a key Massachusetts Senate seat does not bode well for the passage of reform legislation.

The Jewish-Latino alliance on immigration issues builds on the heritage and experience of the Jewish community and on the enthusiasm and urgent needs of the Hispanic community, which has a strong interest in issues of family unification and the status of the some 12 million illegal immigrants, most of them from Latin America.

But Jewish activists also see the joint work as an opening for cooperation with the Hispanic community on other issues, such as Israel.

Jewish organizations have been increasing their efforts to reach out to the Hispanic community for several years, and most national groups have established joint programs and sponsored Jewish-Hispanic events. With the rapid growth of the Hispanic community and with its rising political clout, Jewish groups see added value in building bridges to the community.

"We are working on immigration, because it is the right thing to do, because it is part of our values," said the AJC's Foltin. "But the dialogue also creates better understanding for the needs of our community."

Immigration reform is a pressing issue of morality

Houston Chronicle
1/31/10

On Jan. 11, more than 300 clergy from dozens of religious denominations came from the far reaches of the Houston region in support of a critical moral issue, humane immigration reform.

All our faith traditions share a fundamental belief that human beings are made in the image and likeness of God and that we must treat every person with dignity, for "the strangers who sojourn with you shall be to you as the natives among you, and you shall love them as yourself" (Leviticus 19:33-34). The interfaith statement includes seven principles that are rooted in our holy Scriptures, our faith traditions and our sense of American democratic values, which include:
  • upholding family unity;
  • creating a legalization process for undocumented immigrants;
  • protecting workers;
  • facilitating immigrant integration;
  • restoring due process and just detention protections;
  • aligning enforcement with humanitarian values;
  • immigration as a matter of human rights.

Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers openly associates with hate groups

Atlanta, GA - February 4, 2009

"Rogers maintains that FAIR is not a hate group. He does admit to working with FAIR during the 2006 Legislative session while working on SB529, the infamous anti-immigrant initiative which became law.

Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers had another opportunity to denounce FAIR and its racist ties, but instead he choose to defend FAIR. He even went as far as dismissing the in-depth report issued by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Shame on him for his continued association with hate groups like the Dustin Inman Society, the Federation of American Immigration Reform (FAIR) and his refusal to denounce the Minutemen as vigilantes. Senator Rogers continues to fan the flames of intolerance in our state and our global investors should take notice: Senate Majority Leader Associates with Hate Groups"

McKENZIE: We can't wait for comprehensive immigration reform

Gwinnett Daily Post
1/31/10

By:Sean McKenzie

Latino groups are beginning to push for a comprehensive immigration reform bill to be passed this year. Opponents argue that given the state of the economy and the political shot heard round the world in Massachusetts, this is no time for another controversial initiative. They are wrong. Now is the time to push a bill through Congress. A unique coalition needs to be convinced of this.

Democrats should not delay because they will not have this much political power again for quite some time. Immigration advocates should tell Democrats again and again about John Kennedy's "Profiles in Courage," because a vote for comprehensive reform in this environment will be a brave vote indeed. Why should it be taken? The measure of a political career is the meaningful stands on principle one takes, not the total number of elections won.

What about the president? If I can borrow a phrase that was undoubtedly used in many speeches honoring Martin Luther King recently, now is the time for President Barack Obama to push this bill because it is his best chance to pass it. To this point, Obama's stance on immigration has been similar to President Kennedy's very equivocal support for civil rights: no profile in courage. At some point, and that point being right now, Obama must decide that the moral case for immigration reform trumps the political risk. Now is the time to pass a bill, because after the mid-terms, Obama and the Democrats will emerge weakened.

"SB67=KIA Go Home" is back in 2010!

Despite the scandals in the lack of ethics from some under the Gold Dome, despite the looming budget problems and despite financial crisis in the state of Georgia, Senator Murphy continues to push the "SB67=Kia Go Home" legislation that would make Georgia the ONLY state in the country with an ENGLISH-only requirement for driver's license exams.  This legislation is bad for economic development if GA is interested in attracting foreign investment.

Shame on Senator Jack Murphy for continuing his anti-immigrant and anti-foreign investment efforts which would make Georgia less competitive for attracting foreign investment.  "Send us your money but your people are not welcome," is not a good slogan to attract foreign investors.

I wonder what KIA executives will do if the driver's license exam they take is not offered in Korean?  They can build cars in Georgia, generate $1B in economic activity, but they can't legally drive their own cars here?  That does not make sense Senator Murphy...

air tran colorThis Week in Immigration: Lost in Translation: What the President Really Said about Immigration Reform

Written by Immigration Policy Center
Posted on 2010-01-29

Unless you were hanging on every word in Wednesday night's State of the Union Address, you might have missed that the President reaffirmed his commitment to fixing our broken immigration system. His commitment wasn't as specific as many of the things he has said about immigration reform in the past. In fact, this glancing mention of immigration reform has already caused a backlash among activists--many of whom are disappointed that the message was too muted and without teeth. But upon closer inspection, you might find the President's message of bipartisanship, American values and the importance of diversity translates into moving forward on immigration reform.

NALEO REACTS TO STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS: Results for our community will require strong leadership by the White House and Congress

Written by NALEO
January 28, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC- The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) issued the following statement following Wednesday's State of the Union Address by President Barack Obama:

"We appreciate that President Obama is committed to addressing the needs of American families as they face the worse economic downturn in recent history. Latinos have been disproportionately affected by job loss and home foreclosures and deserve the opportunity to take care of their families. It is our hope that as President Obama develops policies aimed at strengthening America's working families, he also fulfill the clear and unequivocal commitment he made during his campaign to fix our nation's broken immigration system.
