Atlanta, GA - January 26, 2010 - Following an intense "Immigration Reform Week of Action", the GALEO Leadership Council (GLC) has worked hard to ensure we continue to keep the dialogue on comprehensive immigration reform at the forefront of Georgians' minds.  The screening of the "Papers" documentary will be held on Saturday, January 30th at 1:00 PM, at the Decatur Library Auditorium.  The screening is free to the public but RSVP is required.

The GALEO Leadership Council's mission is to support GALEO's mission of civic engagement/involvement and leadership development through proactive measures and is made up of GALEO Members and alumni of the GALEO Institute for Leadership.

"The community is invited to watch the documentary of these students and realize the complexities within our broken immigration system.  This is also a way for community members to become more informed on these issues and become actively engaged in the proposed federal legislative efforts, such as the DREAM Act and comprehensive immigration reform," said Kira Potter, a GALEO Leadership Council member and project leader for the screening.

"Many students in Georgia are experiencing the same challenges.  Ultimately, we need to work towards a solution that ensures we address these serious issues created by a dysfunctional immigration process.  The answer points towards comprehensive immigration reform again and GALEO and community members will work with Georgia's Congressional delegation to ensure immigration reform becomes a reality in 2010," concluded Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO.

Documentary Storyline:

Imagine if you did not have the right to live in the country where you grew up. Imagine that you couldn't work or drive. Imagine you couldn't apply for a state ID or get on an airplane. Imagine you could be deported to a country you don't remember. These are some of the obstacles undocumented, immigrant youth face when they graduate from high school.

There are approximately 2 million undocumented children who were born outside the U.S. and raised in this country. These are young people who were educated in American schools, hold American values, know only the U.S. as home and who, upon high school graduation, find the door to their future slammed shut. 65,000 undocumented students graduate every year from high school without "papers." It is against the law to work or drive. It is difficult, if not impossible in some states, to attend college. Currently, there is no path to citizenship for these young people. Graham Street Productions, a Portland-based film company is producing this film in partnership with Film Action Oregon. They are working in collaboration with the youth who want to tell their stories as well as community organizations around the country who are working to change immigration policy on behalf of these young people.

Graham Street Productions is producing this film in association with El Grupo Juvenil (the "Papers" Youth Crew). These youth producers are actively involved in all aspects of the production. For more information, contact Brooke Wheatley, 503-282-8683 or at: brooke@grahamstreetproductions.com
