Will Super Tuesday Make...Or Break us? March 6, 2012 |
|
Greetings!
Pierre Bynum at the Family Research Council, offered us a unique perspective on this day in history.
"On August 14, 1945, after atomic bombs devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese announced their surrender, ending World War II. On March 6, 1946," (in Columbus, Ohio, the same day we now call "Super Tuesday", and the city and state upon which the eyes of the nation are now focused), "President Harry Truman addressed pastors and denominational leaders." He said:
"We have just come through a decade in which forces of evil in various parts of the world have been lined up in a bitter fight to banish [religion and democracy] from the face of the earth...[Both] are founded on one basic principle, the worth and dignity of the individual man and woman. Dictatorship, on the other hand, has always rejected that principle. Dictatorship, by whatever name, is founded on the doctrine that the individual amounts to nothing; that the State is the only thing that counts; and that men and women and children were put on earth solely for the purpose of serving the State. In that long struggle between these two doctrines, the cause of decency and righteousness has been victorious. The right of every human being to live in dignity and freedom... to fix his own relationship to...men and to his Creator - these again have been saved for mankind...
The victory took a toll of human life and treasure so large that it should bring home to us forever, how precious, how invaluable, is our liberty (hilites mine) which we had just begun to take for granted. Now that we have preserved our freedom of conscience and religion...let us make full use of that freedom... threats of new conflicts, new terror, and new destruction... call for one thing, without which we are lost. They call for a moral and spiritual awakening...The problems of today will yield to nothing less than that kind of revival...
All mankind now stands in the doorway to destruction-or upon the threshold of the greatest age in history... Only a high moral standard can master this new power...and develop it for the common good... That is the great task for you teachers of religious faith. This is a supreme opportunity for the Church to continue to fulfill its mission on earth... No other agency can do it. Unless it is done, we are headed for the disaster we would deserve. Oh for an Isaiah or a Saint Paul to reawaken this sick world to its moral responsibilities! ...

At the end of the day
Will it be evident that America's pastors, and denominational leaders paid any heed to what Truman said? Will there be any proof that our spiritual leaders took to heart then or even now, that elections are part of the"supreme opportunity for the Church to continue to fulfill its mission on earth"; that the "call for a moral and spiritual awakening" spills over into the voting booth through our votes?
Will it be evident that the preservation of "our liberty" as revealed at the polls, in the public square, and in the voting booth of conscience and enlightened conviction, is being taught from our pulpits?
Will we have taken that "precious liberty" seriously, or placed it in the hands of one who believes the most important role of a President is to fix the economy? Will there be evidence that our pastors and denominational leaders have taken seriously the admonition of John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, who said, "Providence has given our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers." Will it be evident that we believe our archeologically supported 4 millennia based and historically proven Christian faith, is essential to America's future, or that of a Presidential candidate whose faith has a dubious 18th century beginning, no authority other than the Book of Mormon, and no archeological evidence or record to substantiate the claims of its founder? Will it be evident that we have opted for our pocket book concerns as the driving force of our political views, or for those principles, virtues, and institutions upon which our nation was founded? Indeed, the evidence will be in the outcome of our votes today, March 6, 2012, exactly 66 years after Truman's prophetic message to the pastors and denominational leaders of Columbus, Ohio. |
