Christian Responsibility As Citizens

Jesus quoted the Prophets extensively as He taught the people, to make a point about what was right and true. The Prophets engaged in confronting their kings—often times face-to-face—at great danger to their selves. Their writings were copied and read by the people and their leaders, not just future generations. They spoke publicly and extensively about the evils of the time, including the evils of their rulers, and called the people to turn from their wicked ways and back to God.

Scripture is clear that our citizenship is both heavenly and earthly and, while on earth, we are His Ambassadors to the Lost. As revealed in the Bible by the Prophets, the Apostles, and Christ Himself, the entirety of that revelation impacts culture, civil government, and discourse about government, both good and bad.

Like the Prophets and our Founders, we are to defend and uphold those Biblical principles and moral foundations our Founders discerned from the Scriptures, embraced, and implemented in the Constitution. When attacked, diminished, or rejected, Christians are duty bound to speak up. Jesus, referring to the false teaching of the religious leaders of His day, said, “You have heard it said, but I say unto you...”

Unfortunately, we Christians have been led to believe we are violating the First Amendment if we speak up in opposition to vain, futile, and ungodly policies, a view that Jefferson and the Founders clearly rejected.

If we subscribe to the secular and unfounded notion that saying anything about any issue, policy, political philosophy, court decision, or government program suggested or imposed by our leaders, is out of bounds, we have given up our blood bought freedom of speech, unwittingly embraced the political correctness of the left in America, and silenced the truth and wisdom of God that all governments ignore to their nation’s peril.
