Greetings!
Mark Twain, famed author and humorist (1835-1910), said, "It will be conceded...that a Christian's first duty is to God. It then follows, as a matter of course, that it is his duty to carry his Christian code of morals to the polls and vote them." It appears that today's Evangelical Christians - or at least a large percentage in New Hampshire - do not believe they have a duty to carry the morality and values of their God into the voting booth. Of the 22% of those who voted in the New Hampshire Primary who claimed in the exit polls to be Born Again, Evangelical Christians, only 23% voted for Rick Santorum, without dispute the most committed of all the Republican Candidates for President to the protection of the innocents. Surprisingly, 31% voted for Mitt Romney, whose switch from pro-choice to pro-life and subsequent failure to live up to that commitment as Governor of Massachusetts, made his commitment to the unborn highly suspect. Only 6% of all the voters said abortion "mattered most" in deciding how they voted. 61% said the economy was most important in making their decision for whom to vote, followed by the federal deficit at 24% That means that of the 22% who claimed to be Born Again and Evangelical, 16% said financial issues were more important than a candidates commitment to ending the slaughter of the innocents. If our first duty is to God and close akin to that, voting the morality and principles He has revealed and history has upheld, what are we Christians doing by putting money over morality, over the life of the innocent? Conforming ourselves to the ways of the world at the ballot box instead of the eternal rules of order and right is the very thinking that has delivered our nation to the precipice of insolvency, not only monetarily but spiritually! Since when is money more important than life to the one who created life in His own image? In Iowa, Santorum - with little money - surged from insignificance to within 7 votes of Romney by traveling the state communicating his strong pro life, pro family, faith, and conservative track record as a U.S. Senator, while Romney's surrogates were spending millions on brutally negative media ads to quash the surge in the polls by Newt Gingrich. The contrast in approach led to a resoundingly strong endorsement on election day of Santorum, in spite of Romney's well funded campaign and millions in negative ads. Christians, by conforming ourselves to what God has said, as we VOTE - rather than to the worldly perspectives of pollsters, media pundits, and party leaders - can change America. If we are not thusly committed, we may well become the achilles heel of the 2012 elections. (Cf. Romans 12:1-2) Mark Twain went on to say, "If the Christians of America could be persuaded to vote God and a clean ticket, it would bring about a moral revolution that would be incalculably beneficent. It would save the country." May the 'power of the Gospel', as Daniel Webster said, 'be felt throughout the length and breadth of the land', starting with your heart and mine. ---------------------------------------- To those who have not yet made a commitment to be a monthly contributor in support of our "America2012" Project through our online donation page, or by mail, please prayerfully consider doing so.
