Veteran's Day - What Have We Learned?
Vanity, and the whole duty of man
November 11, 2011 |
Greetings!
I remember the day I departed the USS Hancock for the last time after two tours of duty to Vietnam. I was now both a 'veteran' and a civilian, no longer totally under the authority of the United States Navy, a free man at last, or so it seemed. As Merrily and I drove off the base at Alameda, the laws of the State of California and the United States did not cease to apply to me. The restrictions with which I had voluntarily placed myself when I joined the Navy, however, were no longer there.
After 3 years of service in what turned out to be a losing cause for millions of Vietnamese, 60,000 Americans who came home in body bags, thousands more who lost limbs and mobility, MIA's who would never come home - to the great loss and sadness of all their families and the nation - it gave me pause to wonder if the politicians in Washington could ever count the cost or feel the loss themselves unless they were required to lead the troops into any war or conflict in which they chose the nation to engage. Auto Von Bismark said,
"Anyone who has ever looked into the glazed eyes of a soldier dying on the battlefield will think hard before starting a war." |

A Veteran
A veteran is a person who voluntarily or by conscription, is willing to sacrifice his or her life, limbs, and freedom through military service to defend his nation or another nation if required. Since the founding of our nation, millions have served, and sacrificed.
Veterans Day
Veterans who have served and paid a price, either in years of service, physical infirmity, emotional stress, or with family, are respected and held in high esteem in America by those who appreciate their service. The names of many who paid the ultimate price are found on monuments, memorials, or crosses around the nation and in cemeteries from Asia to Europe.
Contrast that with the lawless who complain, occupy city parks, violate the law, engage in violence, defecate and engage in sex acts in public, expect something for nothing, and find approval from the highest office in the land, and you see the difference in what will save America, and what will destroy it.
"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."
Joseph Campbell

All is vanity
After a life of great accomplishments and observation of life, King Solomon, reputedly one of the wisest of men, wrote "Vanity of vanities; all is vanity." From the first chapter to the last of The Book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon used the word 'vanity' 27 times.
When you consider all the wars from the time of Cain and Abel to the current wars, the terrible history of cruelty amongst men, the sinfulness of our flesh, and the lies that are perpetrated every day, hour, and minute - the murder of millions at the hands of other men, you understand what Solomon meant. Nothing has changed over the millennia, except the peace that passeth all understanding for those who are in Christ and serving others in His Name.
Thank God for our Veterans who served and sacrificed after the example of our LORD, that good could come forth on the earth from their sacrifice in the midst of foolish men.
"Let us her the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."
Ecclesiastes 12:13 |
