Tribute - "A personal offering, testimonial, compliment, or the like, given as if due, or in acknowledgment of gratitude, esteem, or regard."

In ancient times as nations conquered other nations, tribute was required from the vanquished, usually in gold or other valuable material things.  In some countries the tribute was paid in children. It was either an acknowledgment of submission or the price of protection. 

As the western world embraced Christianity, the concept of servant leadership exemplified by King David and perfectly demonstrated by Jesus, won the hearts of the people as they came to know Him, not as a God of judgment and wrath but the God of mercy and grace.  Paying 'tribute' in money, slaves or children to harsh and cruel rulers was replaced by gratitude and respect for those who sacrificially gave their lives in defense of human life and the values our faith brought to America.  The Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials are examples of this gratitude for every generation.   

The Vietnam, Korean, and WWII Memorials, and now the 9-11 Memorials are reminders of the sacrifices of so many for the freedoms that were won at the Cross of Christ, and sacrificially preserved for two millennia.

We pray this day that the reason for these memorials will not be forgotten, that the sacrifices of so many to retain what has been granted and embraced in our Judeo Christian Heritage will be remembered for what they are, the ongoing battle on the earth for the Kingdom of God in our lives and land.
