| Greetings!
Memorial Day is a day to remember all who have served and sacrificed to preserve our freedoms - liberties that come only from God - and for which freedom loving people must contend at the cost of life and limb. But it is more than that. It is also a time to "lay up in our minds" and hearts the meaning and purpose of those events in which millions have given their all.
Christmas, The LORD's Supper, and Easter, memorialize the humility of God coming to earth as a child to deliver mankind from the power of sin and death; His service and sacrifice for us all, as well as His power and authority. It is His promise to deliver the people of Israel from their bondage in Egypt - and by extension, all who would come to Him in faith - however, that is the cornerstone of this nation's birth and memorials. The foundation memorial upon which the future of mankind rests, and from which our forefathers took courage, is found in Exodus 3:14-15.
"And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations."
Not only did God tell Moses and the Israelites Who He Is, He pre-announced His deliverance of the children of Israel from Pharaoh with plagues, miracles, and the parting of the Red Sea with the children of Israel walking across on dry ground. This, He states, was His 'memorial' for all mankind and every generation to remember. It was a monument to His power and authority over mankind, tyrants, the elements, and every living thing on the earth.
These events and all since that have set men free, serve as a picture of the power and faithfulness of God to do what He promises to do. Our memorials, while they re-mind us of our loved ones sacrifices, should remind us also of God's sovereignty and commitment to be 'with us' in the great spiritual battle for America, and the world. They are monuments to God's faithfulness to our Founders and all who have served and sacrificed in the cause of liberty and religious freedom throughout our history. They have not served and sacrificed in vain.
May we and our children remember from whence we have come, and those who made it possible as we visit the cemeteries and memorials across the land, gaze at the crosses on our churches, and in the memorial cemeteries of our fallen around the world.
