| Greetings!
I remember my father telling me when I was 13 years of age that when two men shook hands it committed them to keeping that which they agreed upon.
Apparently that is another relic idea of the past like traditional marriage, fidelity, and morality, that should be disregarded for the expedience of the moment.
Just days ago, and after publicly stating that the United States would never move away from their commitment to Israel's current borders, President Barack Obama did just that, placing the security of Israel clearly in jeopardy.
We label Libya's Qaddafi, and Syria's Assad, as heartless butchers, and narcissistic tyrants looking out for themselves as they kill a thousand of their own people to maintain their dictatorships, but fail to grasp the far greater danger to millions of Jews inside Israel as a result of our President's foolishness.
The question should be obvious: Is it 'moral' to jeopardize the peace, security and very lives of millions of people, for some apparent political gain? Clearly it is not, so what in heaven's name causes people in power to do such foolish things?
Seems expedience has replaced principle, commitment, and one's word at the highest levels of leadership, amongst those who assume our trust yet violate that trust with impunity.
Take for instance Arnold Schwarzenegger who fathered an illegitimate child after vowing to remain faithful to Maria Shriver, and before he ran for the Governorship of California. One wonders at the arrogance of such infidelity not only to his wife and children, but to the people of California. Contrast this with Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels who this morning declined to run for President out of consideration for his family.
In the same week the head of the IMF (International Monetary Fund), one of the most powerful men in the world - a married man - and in whom the leaders of nations placed their trust, sexually assaults a hotel maid, apparently not the first.
One's word it appears - even the vows we make to our spouse - means nothing any more, and the statements drawn up by lawyers, that "I take full responsibility" means just about the same, nothing. In walks Elliot Spitzer, former Governor of New York and high priced call girl user, while a married man.
Consider the people whose lives are seriously affected by such failures of character: the wives, children, relatives, associates, friends, and Voters, who placed their trust in these men. Consider the damage to the nation, as what is left of our confidence in our elected officials ebbs further away like a low tide. And in the case of Barack Obama's failure not only to keep his word but the word and commitment of our former Presidents and United States Congress? We are all affected. Our national character is further diminished by this President. Our word as a nation, and the word of our leaders, has taken another hit in world opinion, as well it should.
