| Greetings!
In I Samuel 8-12 there is an account under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit of Israel's departure from the LORD as their King in preference for an earthly king like the nations around them. When Samuel objected and prayed to the LORD for direction, The LORD said to him,
"Hearken to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them. . . Now then, hearken to their voice; only, you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them." I Samuel 8:7,9
The enslavement described by Samuel in the verses which followed (10-17) has proven prophetic and accurate ever since with history as witness, even to this day in America.
No man, group, or nation, is capable - apart from the Lordship of Christ and the wisdom of the Scriptures reigning in their hearts - of leading a nation into peace and prosperity. None.
Samuel warned of this when he said to the people,
"If you will fear the LORD and serve him and hearken to his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, and if both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the LORD your God, it will be well; but if you will not hearken to the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you and your king." I Samuel 12:14-15
Notice, the 'you' refers to the people, and in America where the people are to govern through the ballot box, it is particularly pertinent.
When men place their trust in 'kings' or those who purport to power instead of the God Who revealed Himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as well as the Prophets - and proved that revelation through miracles, deliverances, Jesus Christ, and all history since - it inevitably leads to greater enslavement, misery and failure at every level of society, including civil government.
America is at that point, but there is hope!
After God demonstrated His power over them and the elements through thunder and rain (I Samuel 12:16-17), the people said to Samuel,
". . . we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king", to which Samuel replied,
"Fear not, you have done all this evil, yet do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart; and do not turn aside after vain things which cannot profit or save, for they are vain...Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you; and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. Only fear the LORD, and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you. But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king."
I Samuel 12:19-21, 23-25 RSV
It is not a coincidence that people around the world have been witnessing the sobering power of the tsunami in Japan to 'sweep away' everything in it's path. For Christians in America and the watching world, it should serve as another sobering witness that the God of the Bible is LORD, not just of the universe, but of nations, the elements, and of men. We will either recognize His authority anew and afresh in repentance and prayer, and serve Him and His purposes on the earth with confidence and the power of the Holy Spirit burning within our hearts, or we, and our leaders, will be 'swept away'.
Pastors, assume your prophetic and teaching mantle and 'instruct' your people 'in the good and right way.'
People of God, 'fear the LORD, and serve Him faithfully' with a whole heart. Meditate on what 'He has done for you', and give thanks. Stop living under a cloud of paralyzing fear and unbelief and choose to follow Him in victory! Be the people of God and turn away from your wicked ways, lest we to be 'swept away' along with those we have chosen to lead us. |
