Add to your faith virtue (moral excellence); and to virtue knowledge;
and to knowledge temperance (self control); and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity (love). For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off.

A billboard Near the Lincoln Tunnel in New Jersey put up by a group called American Atheists "depicts a silhouette of the Three Wise Men approaching a manger alongside the words: "You KNOW it's a Myth. This Season, Celebrate REASON!""
Apparently irked that the birth of Jesus Christ receives far more attention between Thanksgiving and Christmas than do they, and wanting more traffic to their web site, the group put up $20,000 for the billboard and paid for it to stay there through Christmas Day. No matter that it is quite reasonable to believe that Jesus was the Christ prophesied in detail centuries prior, there are always those who will go to great lengths to deny it. Considering His life, claims, miracles, resurrection, eyewitness accounts, historical evidence, and millions of changed lives attesting to His power, they suggest in their blindness, that celebrating Christ's birth is unreasonable, and a 'myth'. |
| Opening our eyes
According to the Apostle Peter, certain actions - if taken by Jesus' followers - would not only enable them to see the future more clearly than unbelievers, but would help those without Christ to avoid the personal and national disaster to which their blindness is leading.
To those who know Christ through His Word and the illuminating work of the indwelling Spirit of God, it is given to see 'afar off', that we may warn those without Christ and without hope of what is to come if men of darkened minds are allowed to ignore the 'eternal rules of order and right.' Jesus declared, "Heaven and earth will pass away but not my Words."
To the degree that men and women read His words objectively, and seek to know the truth, they will have opportunity to respond in faith, receive Christ, and be "born again" to a lively hope and the assurance of eternal life.
The Apostle Peter provides a pattern for us all to follow in these trying times.

| Our Father, eternal, all knowing, and wise beyond our finite minds to grasp, have mercy on us all. Open our hearts to see that by the very words of the Apostle Peter, we have within us, through Your indwelling Holy Spirit, the power to exercise self control, to choose to be moral, to pursue the knowledge of God in Christ, to be patient with one another, to be godly, kind, and loving to all. In this fallen, lawless, and disillusioning world, may we choose to walk with You, and keep our eyes upon Him Who taught us how to abide in Him, to our joy, deliverance, and service to You and our fellow man. May our lives increase in all these qualities and render us "neither useless nor unfruitful" in the true knowledge of our LORD Jesus Christ, and His purposes on the earth, in Whose Name we pray, Amen. |
