The leaders of a major Presbyterian denomination last week voted to ordain to the ministry those the Bible calls "sodomites" after those who lived in the Sodom of Sodom and Gomorrah, and practiced unnatural acts (sodomy) that God called an "abomination." One more step in unraveling the organized Church in America as the representative of His saving truth and a preserver of His presence.
Noah Webster's original 1828 dictionary which reflected the meaning and understanding of the words of the Scriptures our Founders read, defines 'sodomy' as a "crime against nature."
My 1960 college dictionary defined 'sodomy' as "unnatural sexual intercourse, but today's dictionary.com defines it as, "copulation with a member of the same sex", without any suggestion that it is a 'crime against nature' or 'unnatural'.
So why would a group of churches who were once true to the Scriptures upon which they were founded, elevate to positions of authority those who practice what God calls abominable, detestable, and loathsome? Why?
For the same reasons that most pastors and their board members embrace the current notion that "the wall of separation of church and state" is in our founding documents and was the intention of the Founders when it is not and was not. It is the same reason that many formerly Christian churches in America have deceived themselves into believing that killing innocents in the womb is quite okay.
If you repeat a phrase or assertion over and over ad infinitum in the public arena, even if it is untrue and without foundation, after a time, the ignorant and uninformed believe it as 'Gospel'!
Further, people - even Christians who should know better - desire the approval of men more than the approval of God, and will 'go along to get along' rather than take a stand for what is right. They no longer believe there is a hell or a judgement day, preferring to think that this life is all there is, again, contradicting the very scriptures they would have you think they read, having been squeezed into this world's mold.
What is revealing about all this is the level of ignorance and lack of commitment in the Body of Christ, to what the Bible teaches, amongst both our shepherds, and pew sitters, and a preference for the words and reasonings of men rather than the eternal, unchanging Word of God!
And we wonder why America is in dire straits as a nation.
