No!  We Want A King!

The road to ruin

May 20, 2009

"Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.  But you have this day rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said, 'No! but set a king over us.'

I Samuel 10:18-19
Greetings!

As in the days of the Prophet Samuel the people of America have opted for an earthly 'king' to govern them rather than the living God. Unlike the time of our revolution when the great cry was, "No king but King Jesus!", the people of America have turned from The God who repeatedly delivered both them and Israel from their oppressors. . . to an earthly leader. (Cf. I Samuel 8:4-5).
Entrusting our future to man

As in Samuel's day, three thousand years ago, those who have been appointed to positions of authority in America "turned aside after gain; they took bribes and perverted justice." (Cf. I Samuel 8:3)  As a result, the people placed their trust not in God and His laws to deliver - as did our forefathers - but in man and his reasoning to resolve both injustice, greed, and serve our rebellious wants.

Samuel, in obedience to God's command, solemnly warned the people of  "the ways of the king who shall reign over them" (I Samuel 8:9), warnings that apply to all ages, nations, and Americans in the 21st century.
Government under man - I Samuel 8:9-17
  • Their sons would be drawn into the military to man his chariots.
  • He would mobilize them for war, serve in his bureaucracies, and collect his taxes.
  • Their daughters would be taken to serve the domestic needs of the nation.
  • He would take the best of their property and give it to those who serve him and his will.
  • He would take a tenth of what they produced and give it to his "officers and servants."
  • He would take their servants (today's employees), the best of their livestock, and put them to work for his purposes.
  • He would take a tenth of what their livestock produced...and...
  • The Israelites would become his slaves.

When they would "Cry out to the LORD" for deliverance because of the king they had chosen, the LORD would "not answer them." vs. 18  And so it will be in America and around the world until we recognize the "Most High God" is sovereign over all the earth and elect only those who recognize that fact and act accordingly.

Self Delusion - Then and Now

"But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, "No! but we will have a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles."

(I Samuel 8:19)
The necessity of turning

Since the days of the Great Depression and the proliferation of big government under Franklin Roosevelt, Americans have become more dependent upon the reasonings, and foolishness of man than the eternal wisdom, promises, and guidance of God.  At no time in our history is that more apparent than in the current Administration, Congress, and State Governments. The witness of our wickedness and rejection of God have been mounting for decades.  The living and eternal God is true to His promise that unless we turn to Him in brokenness, and humility, and turn from our wicked ways, 'the LORD will not answer.'

Awaken us oh LORD to our peril.  Turn our hearts to You again in prayer and repentance, that You would have mercy and revive the hearts of Your people, to stand still and see Your deliverance once . . . again. Amen
"There comes a time in the affairs of men when they must prepare to defend, not their homes alone, but the tenets of faith and humanity on which their churches, their governments, and their very civilization are founded."

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

"Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens.  They fall when the wise are banished from the public councils, because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded, because they flatter the people, in order to betray them."

Justice Joseph Story, U.S. Supreme Ct. 1811-1845

"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh.  For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."

II Corinthians 10:3-5 KJV
"Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses."

Nehemiah 4:14 NAS
