Trashing The Truth About Marriage
Exposing the Newsweek Article "Our Mutual Joy?"
December 19, 2008 |
| Greetings!
The December 15, 2008 issue of Newsweek Magazine feature article titled "Our Mutual Joy" epitomizes both ignorance of the Bible and the degree to which those who oppose what it teaches will distort that teaching to achieve their goals. If submitted in a divinity class whose professor knew the Bible well, it would have received a failing grade. Publishing it reveals both the ignorance of the secular media about what the Bible teaches, and the agenda of Newsweek and it's editor, John Meacham. Here's why: |
| The author(s) err in several important underlying presuppositions.
First, they presuppose, contrary to the teaching of the Scriptures - and Christ Himself - that the Bible is not the inspired, authoritative Word of God, but merely the writings of men. Having taken what is considered a 'low view' of the authority of the Bible, the authors selectively 'slice and dice' the Scriptures according to their own contemporary secular views to make it say what they want it to say. Referring to the book of Leviticus in the Old Testament, in which the practice of sodomy is clearly proscribed, the authors state, "Our modern understanding of the world has surpassed its prescriptions." They admit that, "The Bible does condemn gay male sex in a handful of passages,"and calls it"an abomination", but then proceed to say, "These are throw away lines in a peculiar text." In so doing, the authors contradict Jesus Himself in John 10:35 when he said,"The scripture cannot be broken."
This presupposition in itself is what renders everything else in the article, like a building without a proper foundation. No developer building a skyscraper would proceed without ensuring the contractor had the credentials and the ability to produce a safe, unshakable, and enduring foundation upon which to build. Too much is at stake, and in the fundamental institution of marriage, there is much at stake. |
| They elevate man above God
Their presupposition that contemporary man is now more enlightened and qualified to make the above judgment, and can therefore reinterpret, revise, and even reject original statements of Scripture to suit their interests and views, is prideful, arrogant, and described in Scripture as "foolish."
In Malachi 3:6, God says, "I am the LORD, I change not." The Apostle Paul, referring to those who engage in homosexual and lesbian behavior, and wish to justify their behavior, said, "Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man...who changed the truth of God into a lie." The Scriptures are clear, and by definition, God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. The eternal God is not corruptible, as is man. He does not change, and that includes his purpose for men and women, and the institution of marriage between a man and a woman. |
They presuppose they can ignore what the Bible teaches about marriage
The authors - from their first two erroneous presuppositions - presuppose they can ignore what the Bible teaches about marriage, select a few verses in which they apply their own distorted hermeneutic, and then assert falsehoods about what the Bible says.
No serious and objective student or scholar of the Bible would employ such unfounded and unwarranted exegesis without first being determined to discredit the Bible in order to support their own point of view. It is not intellectually or journalistically honest, scholarly, or exegetically sound, and therefore should be seen for what it is, a serious distortion of the truth, to serve a wider agenda.
If they can undermine public confidence in what the Bible teaches about marriage, they will eventually get what they want; same sex marriage, a clear violation of God's intention for men, women, children, and a happy society |
The authors and Newsweek Magazine Mock God, His Authority, Marriage, and Millions of Sincere People of Faith
The efforts of these three writers to manipulate the Scripture for their own ends, mocks the authority of God, the reliability of the Bible, the faith of millions of believers, the sanctity of marriage, and demonstrates a dangerous, and foolish disdain for God Himself.
The institution of marriage between a man and woman only, in the whole of Scripture, is clearly ordained and honored by God, for the well being of men and women, and for the conception, birth, nurture, development, and protection of children and the society in which they are born. The authors - and Newsweek Magazine - are deceived, and engaged in the worst kind of misleading deception. David Crowe Director Restore America
