Freedom:  "Indissolubly Linked" with Christianity

The Founder's View of Independence
July 3, 2008
Greetings!

In 1837, John Adams, our Second President and a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, delivered a Fourth of July speech at Newburyport, Massachusetts where he asked them, "Why is it that, next to the birthday of the Savior of the world, your most joyous and most venerated festival returns on this day [the Fourth of July]?"

He answered his own question by saying, "Is it not that, in the chain of human events, the birthday of the nation is indissolubly linked with the birthday of the Savior? That it forms a leading event in the progress of the Gospel dispensation? Is it not that the Declaration of Independence first organized the social compact on the foundation of the Redeemer's mission upon earth? That it laid the cornerstone of human government upon the first precepts of Christianity?"
Rejecting the Foundations of the Nation

Regrettably, that view of our nation's founding is no longer wanted or accepted in our secular, 'me centered' anti Christian culture.  It has been forcibly driven out of the public consciousness by those who reject creationism, The Creator, and the witness of history. Having gained control of our public schools, colleges, universities, entertainment, the media, and now, civil government, their view of liberty is in direct opposition to that of our Founders, a sure formula for unending lawlessness.
Removing God from government

Chuck Colson, in his July 3rd Breakpoint says, "If God is thrown out of our  history, we lose our basis for believing that individuals have rights and dignity.  In an empty universe, we have no meaning, no value. . .no unalienable rights.  Without God as the source of all those moral principles, the public square would quickly revert to the law of the jungle."

Are we there yet?  If not, we can at least see the darkness closing in rapidly.
Unimaginable 'Liberty'

Like Adams, we might well ask, "Is America's future not 'indissolubly linked' with the ordered liberty that was won only through Christ at the Cross?" Was America not founded on Christ's 'mission' on earth to set men free?  To set the 'captives' free?  If it wasn't, the future is very bleak and the lawless will run wild in and amongst our children, and throughout the nation, with a 'liberty' we cannot even imagine.
Ballot Box Revolution

As we celebrate our nation's day of Independence, it is time to solemnly reflect upon the sunset of a great nation and ask ourselves if it need come to this.  In my view, it is time for a second American Revolution that uses the ballot box to ensure we no longer tolerate those in public office who by their very words and actions, willfully reject our Founder's vision of a nation "Under God."

As Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of these United States said, "A nation that does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do.  We are trying to do a futile thing if we do not know where we came from or what we have been about."

"Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us.  The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressman and government officials, but the voters of this country."

Franklin D. Roosevelt, Thirty-Second President of the United State
