Thanksgiving, In the Year of Our LORD, 2007
November 21, 2007
I often wonder when Americans gather for Thanksgiving, whether we truly acknowledge God's goodness toward us any longer or share expressions of gratitude for His kindness. In too many homes in America, I fear it has become something far less and far different. The original Thanksgiving in America occurred after the first harvest in Plymouth Colony in 1621. It was called by Governor Bradford as an expression of thanks to God for a bountiful harvest as the Pilgrims remembered the ordeal of the winter before and looked ahead with thanksgiving for God's provision for the winter that would soon be upon them. While the observance of an annual harvest festival spread throughout New England in the years to follow, it was George Washington who proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving in 1789. With Lincoln's proclamation in 1863 it became an annual observance, and in 1941, by an act of Congress, the fourth Thursday of November was designated the official day of 'Thanksgiving' May you, your family and guests take time to reflect upon that first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Plantation, and what a joyful time it was. Thoughtfully, prayerfully, reflect upon our blessings as a nation since then, and give thanks. And in so doing, may we all turn our hearts anew and afresh to Him, acknowledge His faithfulness, and pray for our nation.Merrily and I give thanks for each and every one of you as you inspire and encourage us by your faithfulness. Have a blessed and joy filled Thanksgiving.
