Christians and the Election: A Sad Story
November 27, 2006
Dear Friends in Christ, Nine million fewer Evangelical Christians in the United States VOTED in the 2006 General Election than voted in 2004. 9,000,000! 126 million people voted in 2004, but only 83 million voted in this election, a difference of 43 million! Christians No Different Than Non Christians
While 23% of those who voted in
2004 were born again evangelicals, they comprised
only 24% of those who voted on November
7th. Christians, tragically for America, view their
citizenship responsibility no differently than non
Christians.
The Evangelical Christian Vote in Oregon
90,000 fewer evangelical Christians VOTED
in the 2006 Oregon General Election than 2
years earlier in 2004.
90,000!
120,000 who were registered to VOTE, DID NOT VOTE, and 126,000 who were eligible to VOTE, were not even registered! How can we say we really care about America, our neighbor, our children, their future, and the LORDSHIP of Christ, when we are so dismissive of our minimal citizenship responsibility? How?
The Folly of our Inattentiveness, Apathy, & Indifference
Abortions Performed on Young Girls
Parents will continue to be excluded from the most
important decision a young woman will make, and
more men, young and old, will get away with rape
and incest without fear. More money will go into the
coffers of the abortionists. Despair, discouragement,
and depression will haunt and harm more young
women, and immoral behavior will be considered
acceptable.
If the 90,000 who thought it important to vote in 2004, and 40,000 of the remaining 156,000 Evangelical Christians who were either registered or unregistered, had registered and VOTED, Parental Notification, would have passed; a much more conservative judge would have been placed on the Oregon Supreme Court, and our values preserved in the legislature. The fact that we did not consider this election as important as that of 2004, says we, our pastors, and our church leaders are NOT as engaged in protecting our teenage daughters, parenting, family, morality, and justice—let alone being good citizens—as the Scriptures call us to be, and as they say they are.
The Oregon Supreme Court
Our apathy, lack of leadership from our pulpits, and
inattentiveness ensured the election of the second
member of the Oregon Supreme Court whose moral
beliefs and behavior are in direct opposition to what
God—who does not change—calls an ‘abomination.’
365Gay.com, in it’s November 8th article “Record Number of Gays Elected To Office,” said, “Judge Virginia Linder will join Rives Kistler on the Oregon Supreme Court, making it the first state ever to have two openly gay Supreme Court Justices.” We further entrenched their stronghold on the Oregon Supreme Court, a court whose immoral decision to allow public sex acts, made national news, and further entrenched Oregon as the place to go for uninhibited sex.
The Oregon Legislature
All three houses of Oregon state government are now
in the hands of those who are determined to foist
upon us all an ungodly and distorted view of life,
marriage, family, and morality.
Those we allowed to be elected by our indifference, apathy, and uninvolvement, will challenge everything we hold dear in the coming legislative session. The question for Oregon's Christians, including pastors and church leaders, is, "Are you committed to stand up, speak up, and rally your people and peers in the power of Christ? Or are you going to continue to shrink into ambivalence, take the easy road, and literally surrender?"
"Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it is sin." James 4:17
The fact that far too many evangelical pastors in Oregon failed to lead aggressively from their pulpits, on clear moral issues, is proof that they are NOT truly engaged in the battle to hold the moral highground in America. Battles that if ignored, will destroy us as a nation. Their failure to trust God, to rise up in the power of the indwelling Spirit to defend His lawful authority and His 'eternal rules of order and right,' is sin, and God will hold them accountable. We all have much to be thankful for in this season of thanksgiving due to those who disdained comfort and the approval of men from the time of our Founders to this very day. But our performance as Christians and as citizens in this election, borders on a deplorable disdain for their sacrifice and a faithless bowing of the knee to the ungodly. As David said about about Goliath, the epitome of defiance of everything from God, "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the living God?" Next time, I will share what we as God's people, and in His power, must do in the coming months to honor and glorify Him Who is not confused by the foolishness of men. "To the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and forever." Jude 25
