Voting and...The "Lesser of Two Evils"
October 26, 2006

Dear Christian Friend,

“Not voting for the least of two evils is tantamount to supporting the greater of two evils!” said Gary Cass, the Director of Reclaiming America. Speaking at the Restoring Northwest America Conference last March, Cass went on to say, “What you have to do is vote for the best, most electable candidate that has the best chance of winning.”

Cass said, “Many Christians don’t vote because they feel they have to choose between “The Lesser of two evils,” but “There are no perfect candidates! We will not have perfect leadership here on earth.”

Defeating The Purpose
Furthermore, Cass said, “Some Christians run for office who we love, have no money, and want us to vote for them. They have no chance of winning, and a vote for them would have been a vote for the worst candidate. Don’t make the ‘perfect’ the enemy of the good and then allow the worst to win!”

Cass, who has significant experience in getting good candidates elected to public office, is right. Buying into this popularized thinking only ensures the worst candidate will win, and that is regrettable for any state that needs a change, and Oregon does!

Examples from the Past
Remember, Ross Perot gave us Bill Clinton. Remember Oregon’s own Tom Cox? Cox took 70,000 votes away from Kevin Mannix in the 2002 Oregon election for Governor, giving the election to our current governor.

Go back a little further and you will recall that Independent, Al Mobley gave us Barbara Roberts.

In Matthew 13:24 ff., Jesus reveals that while the good men “slept,” the enemy came and planted unproductive weeds. The simplistic argument that voting for the “lesser of two evils” is itself evil, when you know you can't and won't win, is less than honorable, and only ensures the worst candidate will be elected.
