The "Black Regiment"
April 18, 2006

Few Americans know that it was America's pastors who led the revolt against Parliament and the King of England in the years leading up to the American Revolution. In fact, their influence was so profound, they were dubbed by the English Parliament as the "Black Regiment."

The Origin of the Phrase
The phrase "Black Regiment," was how the English described the black robed Presbyterian pastors in New England who spoke out from their pulpits against the violations of God's laws and the rights of the colonists, as perpetrated by Parliament and the King of England.

No Fear of Man
It was biblically knowledgeable, evangelical protestant pastors in the tradition of the Reformation, who saw how the God ordained rights of the colonists were being violated. They spoke out without fear against the tyranny of men who violated God's laws, urging their congregations to take action. In stark contrast, there are few pastors in America today who are following in the steps of those early moral and spiritual leaders who ignited the conscience of our forefathers.

Whereas our early pastors deemed our God given and blood bought rights to be of vital importance if the liberties won through Christ were to be preserved, and considered it their Christian duty to speak out, America's contemporary pastors are strangely silent. Unlike pastors at the time of the Revolution, they are seemingly fearful of speaking into the public arena or even to their congregations on the great moral issues of our day and the abuses of government.

Disappointed and Disgusted
A growing number of Americans find the silence of our pulpits on serious moral and ethical issues to be an insult to our Savior and a major factor in America's downward spiral. They find the lack of moral leadership from our pulpits to be an appallingly poor witness to the watching world, unattractive to our youth and masculine men, and fuel to the fire of those who wish to de-Christianize America.

Lead...or Leave
It was Benjamin Franklin who said, "Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God."

We desperately need 'Patriot Pastors' like Mathias Burnett, who said, “Let not your children have reason to curse you for giving up those rights and prostrating those institutions which your fathers delivered to you.”

America needs godly men, fearless men in our pulpits who will lead us back to our Christian Heritage, men who will call us to our responsibility as citizens, to VOTE! Men who will take pains to ensure we understand that NOT VOTING is tantamount to 'giving up' our rights and 'prostrating' the institutions of civil government that our Founding Fathers 'delivered' to us through blood, sweat and tears.
