Abortion & the Conscience of America
January 22, 2006
Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the infamous decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to legalize the destruction of human life in the womb. After 33 years of growing opposition and rancorous debate, the issue of human life, it’s origin and value, is ‘front and center’ in American life as never before. The Emotional Toll On Women
It is not difficult to understand why a growing
number of Americans are opposed to abortion.
With over 40 million abortions having been performed since Roe v. Wade, the emotional toll on women who have had abortions—not to speak of men—grows more glaring with each passing year In an Associated Press article today, college student Laura Arnold said, "I know so many girls who did it and they are hurting every day of their life." The article went on to say that 34 states have passed laws requiring parents either to be notified or to give consent when their underage daughters seek abortions.
Incontrovertible Evidence
The growing education of the populace about ‘fetal’
life and development is another reason more
Americans are uneasy about abortion. Our ability to
see the humanity of the child in the womb at the
early stages of pregnancy through non invasive
ultrasound, is incontrovertible evidence that
we are taking the life of another human being.
The clincher might be the grisly practice of so called ‘partial birth abortion’ a practice that even many hardened pro choicers find difficult to defend. Indeed, the conscience of America has become an issue, as well it should.
Personal And National Tragedy
Our conscience, if seared long enough, will no longer
distinguish between right and wrong. And that is
what we are seeing today in the decisions of our
courts, governmental agencies, political and business
leaders, and everyday people in America who
rationalize the truth.
A society that continues to do what is morally wrong, and justifies it, falls away from what once led to hope, joy and civility brought about by doing what is morally and ethically right. Its people find themselves falling into self hatred, self absorption, greater immorality, idolatry, distraction, personal isolation, lack of confidence, failure, delusion, intolerance and violence. The end result is national tragedy, the collapse of the culture and ultimately, tyranny.
Holding Ourselves Accountable
Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away but
not
my father’s Word.” As Cain was accountable, so
are we.
With the evidence that we are taking the life of another human being when an abortion is performed, and aware that we are morally accountable for our actions, Americans are being confronted more than ever before with whether abortion should be legal or something far less. Those who know in their hearts and minds that abortion is wrong, hold the key to millions of yet unborn, and to America's future. It is we who call ourselves Christians who will make the difference in America if we are willing to stand firm on eternal truth and elect only those who are committed to God’s "eternal rules of order and right." Herb Titus, Constitutional Scholar, graduate of Harvard Law School, Founding Dean of Regent University School of Law and former professor of law at the University of Oregon will speak to the issue of ending legal abortion at the March 3-4 Restoring Northwest America Conference in Tualatin, Oregon.
