2012 AIANYS Convention in Saratoga Springs September 27-292012 Convention Logo 
 

 

     The 2012 AIANYS convention, held in conjunction with AIA Eastern NY, will be held September 27-29 at the Hilton Hotel and City Center in Saratoga Springs. Cutting-edge continuing education seminars led by top experts in their fields will be held throughout the three days of the convention. Topics include: BIM, historic preservation and sustainability.      Tours of the architecture of the Capital Region with guides leading the way, are also scheduled throughout convention. Tours of  EMPAC (Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center) at RPI in Troy, GlobalFoundries FAB, the green semi-conductor facility in Malta, tour of the NYS State Education Dept and a walking tour of the historic Saratoga Race Course, the oldest race track in the country are just some of the offerings.  

     On Thursday, September 27, 2012 the Opening Keynote Speaker will be Peter Marino, FAIA who will present "Building an International Practice." He is the principal of Peter Marino Architect an internationally acclaimed architecture, planning and design firm founded in 1978 and based in New York City.

     Come to a party on Thursday night at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, which is located across from the historic Saratoga Race Course. You will be able to peruse artifacts while enjoying delicious food, great live music and fun!

     Friday, September 28, 2012 will feature "Design and Delivery Trends of the Future," a panel discussion featuring members of AIA National, Associated General Contractors of NYS, NYS Society of Professional Engineers and NYS Council of Landscape Architects. This will be a discussion and question and answer on different topics of concern to all facets of the profession and building industry.

     A General Session from 8 AM to 9 AM called "Architects If They Only Knew" will feature speaker Bill Procida, President, Procida Advisors. Architects possess the best skills to become a developer yet many never pursue development which is more profitable.  This session will address the key aspects than an architect needs to know to "crossover to the other side." Attendees will learn how to utilize skill sets and how to make money as a developer.

     Friday is also the day of the Product Showcase. Located right in the City Center beside the classrooms, the trade show will feature booths from vendors from across the country as well as lunch on the trade show floor. All of the Premium Booth Packages have sold out! There are still Standard Booths available.

     Friday night is the 2012 President's Reception and Design Awards Presentation at the Saratoga Hilton. This black tie-preferred dinner will recognize outstanding works of architecture by New York State architects.

     Saturday, September 29, 2012 will feature a keynote luncheon with Eric Cesal who will present "Down Detour Road: An Architect In Search of Practice." He is a designer, builder, analyst and writer and is currently the Regional Program Manager for Architecture for Humanity in Haiti.  He oversees all ground operations in Architecture for Humanity's Haiti Rebuilding Center, which encompasses architecture, community planning, economic development, technical assistance and design advocacy.

      The Saratoga Springs City Center is attached to the Saratoga Hilton Hotel and was recently renovated and expanded. Located on Broadway the main thoroughfare of Saratoga, the hotel is in walking distance of a vast array of boutiques, award-winning restaurants, specialty food stores and wine bars.

2012 AIANYS Design Awards Jury Meets

 

     The 2012 AIANYS Design Award jury met June 28 and 29 at the Desmond in Albany to review 347 submissions.

2012 AIANYS Design Award Recipients

 

     AIANYS is pleased to announce the 2012 Design Award recipients. They will all be recognized during the President's Dinner and Design Awards Presentation on Friday, September 28, 2012 at the Saratoga Hilton. There are three levels of awards: Award of Excellence, Award of Merit and Citation for Design. A "Best in New York State" Award has also been awarded. The recipient of that award will be revealed at the Design Awards Presentation.

 

     The design categories are: Adaptive Reuse/Historic Preservation; Commercial/Industrial, Large Projects and Small Projects; Institutional; Interiors; International; Pro Bono Projects; Residential, Single Large Projects; Single Small Projects and Multi-Family; Sole Practitioner; Unbuilt, General; Unbuilt, Under 10 Years and Urban Planning/Design. 

     A four-color Design Awards book featuring photos, narratives and jury comments of all of the award-winning projects will be sent out to all AIANYS members in the Fall after the convention.

AIANYS 2012 Honor Awards-Nominations Due August 20, 2012
 

     During the AIANYS Convention, the 2012 Honor Award recipients will be honored. Nominations must be made by a local component (the exception is the Legislator of the Year) and follow the guidelines found in the attached links. The deadline for nominations is August 20, 2012.

James William Kideney Gold Medal Award
The Kideney Gold Medal Award shall be conferred on an AIANYS member who has demonstrated a lifetime of sustained community leadership, thus advancing the profession of architecture through making the community a better place to live. The Kideney Gold Medal Award winner will have also demonstrated an active interest and leadership role in the profession and professional society at the local, state, or national level.

Matthew W. Del Gaudio Service Award
The Del Gaudio Service Award shall be conferred on an AIANYS member who has provided distinguished service to AIANYS and demonstrated notable competence advancing the profession of architecture. The Del Gaudio Service Award winner will have also demonstrated an active interest and leadership role in AIANYS.

President's Award

The President's Award shall be conferred on an AIANYS member who, through outstanding efforts of professional competence in non-traditional areas of architectural practice, has demonstrated lasting influence and raised the standards of professional performance and increased the recognition of professional competence by others. The President's Award winner will have also demonstrated an active interest and leadership role in the professional society at the local, state, or national level.
 
AIANYS Educator Award
Established in 2005, the purpose of the Educator Award is to recognize notable contributions and accomplishments by an architectural educator (does not have to be an AIA member) within New York State.

 

AIANYS Intern - Associate Award
Established in 2005, the purpose of the Intern-Associate Award is to recognize notable contributions and accomplishments by an intern or associate member of AIANYS.
 
AIANYS Student Award
Established in 2005, the purpose of the Student Award is to recognize notable contributions and accomplishments by a student member of AIAS within New York State.

AIANYS Firm Award
Established in 2005, the purpose of the Firm Award is to recognize notable achievements in design, community service, education, and service to the profession and the AIA by an architectural firm within New York State. Projects, accomplishments, and service submitted must reflect a period of at least 10 years
 
Honorary Member of AIA New York State Award
Honorary Membership in the State Association shall be conferred on a person of esteemed character who is not eligible for regular or associate membership, but who has rendered distinguished service to the profession of architecture or the arts and science allied therein.

 

Community Development Award
This Award, in the form of a citation, may be made to any individual, community or civic organization, governmental agency, or private corporation whose efforts have resulted in a significant and positive improvement to the built environment.

Fellows Award
Established in 2006, the purpose of this award is to recognize a Fellow of the AIA who has exemplified the philosophy of Mentorship within the profession. This individual either personally, or through his or her firm has exceeded in helping a young architect (as defined by AIA), student or an unlicensed individual to gain a greater knowledge of the profession and has assisted them in achieving more than they would have normally within the profession without this guidance.

AIA State Government Network Annual Meeting

 

     AIA State Government Network held their annual meeting in Denver, CO July 16-17. Tim Boyland, AIA, VP, Government Advocacy and Edward Farrell, Executive Director, attended the two day meeting. Russell Davidson, AIA, Vice President, AIA and Terrence O'Neal, AIA, both Past Presidents of AIANYS, were featured speakers at the meeting. The State Government Network gives state components the resources necessary to advocate effectively on the state government level.

Regional Director Nominating Committee Report

 

     The 2012 Regional Director Nominating Committee met on June 25, 2012. The Committee reviewed nominations for the position of Regional Director to the AIA Board of Directors.
     A motion was adopted that the Chapter nominations submitted for Burton Roslyn, FAIA were in order according to the bylaws of AIANYS and will be brought forward for election at the Annual Meeting on September 27, 2012 in Saratoga Springs.
     Serving on the Regional Director Nominating Committee are: Kirk Narburgh, AIA, President, Central New York Chapter; Giuseppe Anzalone, President, Brooklyn Chapter and Dilip C. Khale, AIA, President, AIA Long Island Chapter. 

New York State Energy Code Courses

 

     The 2012 Energy Conservation Construction Code of New York State (ECCCNYS-2010) effective December 28, 2010, is now mandatory throughout New York State. The code regulates the design and construction of buildings for the effective use of energy.   

     Urban Green Council and AIA New York have developed a four-hour course to familiarize architects and engineers with the ECCCNYS-2010, the fundamentals of low energy design, and the processes available to demonstrate compliance.

     The course will address commercial buildings, including residential buildings over three stories. It will also address the Energy Conservation Code of New York City (Local Law 1-2011), which is more stringent than the State code. ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007, an alternative compliance pathway for meeting the requirements of ECCNYS-2010, will be references, but not covered in detail.

     This program is funded by NYSERDA through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.  All classes will be located at the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York, NY and are 8 AM to 12.

     Architects: 4 LU Hours HSW/SD (AIA approved credits may also be used by NY State Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors should they be acceptable content.)

     GBCI: 4.0 GBCI credits are for LEED Professionals participating in the Credential Maintenance Program.

 

AIA Eastern NY Boat Cruise

 

     AIA Eastern NY held their annual boat cruise on July 18 on the Captain JP in Troy. The cruise included dinner on the boat, the opportunity to network with fellow AIA members and the chance to earn CE credits through the course "Built to Last: State Capital Restoration Work & the State Police Troop G Headquarters Building."

AIA/NCARB IDP Firm Awards Program 

 

     The AIA/NCARB Intern Development Program Advisory Committee (IDPAC) is now accepting applications for the 2012- 2015 IDP Firm Awards Program! Since 1991, the IDP Outstanding Firm Awards program has recognized firms who actively embrace the NCARB Intern Development Program (IDP) and demonstrate a commitment to interns by making the path to licensure an integral part of the firm's culture. The deadline to apply is September 24, 2012.

     In 2008, the program expanded to recognize "IDP Firms" that meet twelve essential criteria in the categories of Mentoring, Supervising, Training Opportunities, Commitment to IDP, and ARE Support. The IDP Outstanding Firm Award is reserved for firms who meet these essential criteria with excellence in these categories as well as demonstrate an "innovative" effort or outstanding practice in their efforts with the Intern Development Program.
