| Call for Nominations for 2013 AIANYS Officers and Associate Director
One of the most important functions of a local chapter is its participation in the AIA New York State's nominations process. Each year, the Nominating Committee requests chapters to consider the names of qualified individuals for the following AIANYS offices/positions: President-Elect; Secretary; Treasurer (elected in odd number years for a two-year term); Vice President of Government Advocacy; Vice President of Public Advocacy and Associate Member Director.
All nominations are due by July 2, 2012. The elections are held at the Annual Meeting in conjunction with the AIANYS Convention in September in Saratoga Springs.
AIANYS Officers
The following offices will be filled for a one year term in 2013: President-Elect, Secretary, Vice President of Government Advocacy and Vice President of Public Advocacy. For 2013 Jeffrey Smith, AIA, will be serving the second year of his two-year term. With the exceptions of the President-Elect and the Treasurer, officers may be eligible for re-election the following year for the same office for a maximum of two consecutive terms. All elected officers take office at the Inaugural Meeting of the Board that is traditionally held in January.
Eligibility, Nominations and Nomination Form
Candidates for the office of President-Elect must be members in good standing of their Chapter Component, and must have previously held elective office at any level of the AIA. Candidates for Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President of Government Advocacy and Vice President of Public Advocacy must be members in good standing and be either currently serving or past serving members of the Board of Directors of AIANYS. Officers must be nominated by their Chapter as per the AIANYS Bylaws 5.03(g)
Election of the Associate Director
In 2012, AIANYS will elect an Associate Director. The AIANYS Associate Director will be elected for a one-year term at the Annual Meeting. The Associate Director is a Director at Large, and the nomination is not covered by the constraints of Article 5.03c. Chapters can make a nomination for only one office.
Nomination Procedures and Forms
Nomination forms have already been sent to the chapters and are due by the close of business on or before July 2, 2012 at the AIANYS Office accompanied by a brief statement of qualifications from the Chapter Component. Please be sure the form is signed both by the Chapter Secretary and President. Please send to: AIANYS, 52 South Pearl Street, Albany, NY 12207 or they may be sent by email to efarrell@aianys.org. Please call to make sure your Chapter nomination and Statement of Qualifications has been received by the deadline.
Candidates must send to AIANYS, a photo and brief "Statement of Philosophy" about why he/she would like to serve in the position. These must be sent to AIANYS on or before July 2, 2012. Candidates may send hard copy of the photo and the Statement of Philosophy but must also send each as digital images via e-mail to gabailey@aianys.org, photo in JPEG format or TIFF and the Statement as a Word document.
Chapter Representatives to the AIANYS Board of Directors
Directors and Alternate Directors are elected to the AIANYS Board of Directors by the Chapter Components, each Chapter Component being assigned one each, except the New York Chapter which may appoint three. Under separate cover, in October, you will be notified to elect your Director (if applicable) for the 2013-2014 term; in the meantime we encourage chapters to begin evaluating the best candidates to be appointed to serve as their chapter's representative(s). The first meeting of the AIANYS Board of Directors will be in January 2013. |

AIANYS Holds Strategic Planning Retreat
AIANYS held a strategic planning retreat June 13 and 14 at The Desmond in Albany. Bob Harris, CAE, owner of an association management company in Tallahassee, was the facilitator. Attendees of the retreat were the Board of Directors, CACE members and the AIANYS staff.
The first day began with an overview of the board of directors' roles and planning, an organizational overview including a review of the 2008 AIANYS strategic plan, and then a discussion of the mission statement, vision statement and values. The major goals were also identified for the 2012-2015 strategic plan.
The second day started with a refinement of the mission statement and vision statement. The goals were then tightened and then each one was discussed in depth. Strategies to achieve each goal were identified, as well as performance metrics. The plan is currently being finalized. Once it is completed, it will be sent out to the membership.
