AIANYS ARE Scholarship
The AIANYS Emerging Professionals Committee has put together for the first time a scholarship program for the ARE. This scholarship was created to recognize Associate AIA members who have made significant contributions at an early stage in their career to the profession and to encourage their pursuit of licensure in New York State.
Awards are based on both a demonstration of financial need and the contributions the individual has made to the profession, their community and/or the AIA in New York State. A jury of distinguished professionals from the AIANYS Board of Directors, College of Fellows and NYS Emerging Professional's Leadership will select the recipients based on the criteria below.
AWARD DETAILS Scholarship recipients will receive:
- Recognition for their achievements at the AIA New York State Convention.
- A one-time reimbursement for the cost of passing each single division of the ARE*
*The full amount of the scholarship ($1,470.00) will be sent to the recipient this Fall. AIANYS will award a maximum of one award per calendar year. This scholarship is subject to local, state, and federal tax.
CRITERIA
Applicants should demonstrate more than one of the following attributes:
- Outstanding achievement in the creation, development and delivery of creative programs for interns, Associates, and/or young architects within New York State
- Significant contributions at an early stage of their career to the profession and/or community
- Exemplary involvement in community and/or professional organizations
- Traditional or alternative career path, with demonstrated passion for pursuit of registration
- Strong letters of support detailing personal and professional contributions; and/or
- Inspiring statement of contribution.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must demonstrate the following:
- Actively participating Associate AIA Member, in good standing, of an AIA New York State Chapter
- Letter of verification from firm/employer that they do not reimburse applicant for the cost of the exam
- Applicant must not have previously received the AIA National Jason Pettigrew Memorial ARE Scholarship or a similar award providing reimbursement for the ARE*
*Letter of verification signed by both Local AIA Chapter President and Applicant required
In order for an applicant to be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must also be one of the following:
- NCARB Record holder in good standing. Provide your NCARB Record Number for verification purposes.
- An individual who has passed one or more of the divisions of the ARE within the past year
SUBMISSION INFORMATION In order to ensure the fair and thorough evaluation of all candidates, submit the following materials in the manner described below. Any entries submitted without the required materials will be disqualified.
- Submission materials must be within an 8 1/2" x 11" electronic PDF format submitted as ONE file, limited to no more than the page specifications stated below.
*Note: By making a submission, the applicant grants permission to AIANYS to reproduce and publicly display submission material if the applicant receives an award. Materials submitted will not be returned to the applicant.
APPLICATION The Candidate's application must also include: * Completed demonstration letters that candidate has met the required pre-requisites (See Eligibility Above) * One letter of nomination submitted by an AIANYS Chapter member or AIA Component Executive (1 page limit) * One statement of contribution written by the applicant (1 page limit) * One biography and/or resume (2 page limit) * Two letters of recommendation (1 page limit per letter)
Note: Letters should come from individuals who can speak to the candidate's accomplishments outlined in the personal statement. We recommend no more than one letter from each company/organization. The ideal candidate will have a variety of letters from their firm, a community organization, a member of the architecture profession, and/or a mentor.
SCHEDULE The AIA assumes no responsibility for the delivery of the material. It is the responsibility of the nominating individual to see that the submission is delivered to AIANYS by the appropriate date.
