AIANYS 2012 Design Awards-Registrations Due by May 14!
AIA New York State has recognized outstanding works of architecture through the annual Design Awards Program since 1968. These awards honor works of architecture located anywhere in the world by AIA New York State members and works of architecture located only in New York State by other New York State registered architects completed since January 1, 2007. AIANYS is currently calling for entries for the 2012 Design Awards. A Call for Entries brochure which includes the submission guidelines, registration form, checklist and photo release form was mailed out earlier this month. Go to: http://www.aianys.org/awards/design_guidelines.shtml for more information.
The registration form and fee is due to AIANYS by May 14, 2012 (must be registered online by this date). Portfolios, checklists and photo releases are due by June 8, 2012. This year all Design Awards must be submitted digitally. The Design Award Jury will meet in late June to decide the winners and the recipients will be notified soon after.
New for 2012! Several new categories have been added or revised. The Residential category now has 3 sub-categories: Single Family Detached, under 2,500 square feet; Single Family Detached, 2,500 square feet and over or Multi-Family, Multiple Dwellings. New categories are Pro Bono Projects and Sole Practitioner. Adaptive Reuse and Historic Preservation have been combined into one category.
Also new this year is all Chapters will be asked to submit two local winners to AIANYS for consideration by the jury. The Chapter may choose from their 2011 or 2012 programs. While there will be no charge for the submittals, they will be required to follow the same guidelines as any other entry.
All AIANYS Design Award recipients will prepare a design board for display during the AIANYS Convention in Saratoga Springs. All of the AIANYS Design Awards will be presented at the President's Reception, Dinner and Design Awards Presentation on September 28, 2012 at the Hilton Hotel in Saratoga Springs. AIANYS Receives AIA Component Matching Grant
AIANYS has received a 2012 AIA Component Matching Grant for the Student Awards Program.
The AIA National Component supports local and state Components or their affiliated foundations in their efforts to provide and develop scholarship programs. Offering matching grants to augment existing Component programs reinforces the significance of the AIA in the lives of architects, aspiring students, and their communities, and stimulates interest in the formation of new scholarship programs.
The AIANYS Student Award Program was created in 2007 to serve as a way of engaging and recognizing students enrolled in the ten NAAB-accredited schools in New York State. This program allows students to share ideas on design concepts which improve upon natural and built environments, while positioning them to assist in advancing both the profession and community at large. This is the third year in a row that AIANYS has received this grant.

AIANYS 2012 Media Postcard Campaign
For the third year in a row, AIANYS has continued the every building has an architect media campaign. The Public Advocacy committee put together the postcard with the help of a graphic designer. The postcard featured a photo of the 2011 AIANYS Design Award winner Inverted Warehouse/Townhouse, New York, NY, Dean/Wolf Architects, New York, NY.
This postcard was mailed out to over 300 media outlets throughout New York State to help spread the word that architects should be credited for their work every time a building is featured in the media.
Once again, chapters were able to have their own postcards designed with photos of work by chapter members. The four chapters are: AIA Brooklyn, AIA Peconic, AIA Southern NY and AIA Westchester + Hudson Valley. The postcards were sent directly to the chapters for them to distribute themselves.
To download the AIANYS postcard, go to the Resources page on the website www.aianys.org.

| AIANYS Radio Ad Campaign
The AIANYS Public Advocacy Committee put together a radio ad campaign promoting AIA architects and the work that they do. The committee decided to redirect the funds for the Empire State Challenge to this media campaign. Using a professional media buyer, they put together a plan for the Capital Region area to use as a "test market." The committee wrote the copy for the ad and a local voiceover talent recorded the spot.
The ad ran on two radio stations (an all news and talk station and a classic rock station) starting on March 29 (and coinciding with National Architecture Week) for 2 weeks for a total of 88 (30 second) spots. There was also a link on the radio station websites to the AIANYS website. Go to: http://www.aianys.org/linkmp3.html to hear the radio ad.
The Public Advocacy Committee decided to use the remaining budget to offer two chapters a grant of $1,500 each to use for their own radio ad campaign. The media buyer has offered her services to the two chapters. She will work with the chapters to identify which radio station in their market will work best and purchase ads at that station. Interest was high with 8 chapters responding. A lottery was held and the two winning chapters are: AIA Central NY and AIA Peconic. They will work with the media buyer and their ads will run soon! |
