The Center for Architecture Has Expanded!

The AIA New York Chapter which opened the Center for Architecture almost 8 years ago, has now expanded the Center to the adjacent storefront to the south, located at 532 LaGuardia Place. AIA New York held a Breakthrough Party in January to debut the space.

The new space, designed by Rogers Marvel Architects, provides an additional 1,200 square feet of ground-floor area for the Center's activities, including events and receptions, as well as AIANY committee meetings and Foundation programs. Like the Center's other meeting rooms, it will also be available for rent, offering supplementary revenue to support the Center.

RPI Architecture Students Create S(around)OUND Project

Architecture and art students from RPI are putting together a performance art project called S(around)OUND at the Troy Gasholder Building in Troy, NY. This project combines architecture, art, animation, hybrid violin, computer and lifts to move the audience around the inside of the space. There will be 3 stages with the program lasting about 90 minutes. The event will take place Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25 starting at 6 PM. The event is free and open to the public.

Tyler Hopf, an architecture student at RPI and the AIANYS Student Director started working on the project last year with the assistance of Installation artist and RPI Associate Professor of Architecture Michael Oatman and hybrid violinist Todd Reynolds.

"The design for this project was a result of several intentions. The class aimed to create a completely unique audience experience, where the audience actually becomes the performer at some points and plays an active and essential roll in the show. The audience experiences dynamic walls that expose different parts of the space, interactive instruments that stretch the full height of the building, inhabitable inflatables and is finally lifted in the air with industrial man lifts. Performances typically involve a static audience that sits and watches. This project aims to challenge that perception so the audience is as active or even more active than our incredible performer, Todd Reynolds," said Tyler Hopf.

"The architecture students involved in the project were in charge of organizing the space.  They designed and constructed wall systems that stretch to 50 foot high and then collapse and compress into folded pieces to completely change the space. Inflatables that are up to 20 feet high were also built so that audience members can inhabit them and explore a completely new experience-walking through an inflation. And finally, the use of man lifts is seen as an architectural move to transcend limitations of typical architectural elements. Moving vertically becomes an industrial action, integrated and choreographed with the music of the performance," said Hopf.
