| 2011 AIANYS Honor Award Recipients
The AIANYS Honor Awards are traditionally presented at the Annual Convention. Since the 2011 convention was held in conjunction with New Jersey and Pennsylvania, there was no time allotted to make the presentations. Therefore, the Board voted to present the 2011 awards at the Installation dinner on January 12 at The Desmond.
The Honor Awards program was instituted to provide appropriate recognition to individuals who have influenced the profession of architecture in New York State. These awards reflect notable contributions, outstanding service, or specific actions taken by architects or organizations who demonstrate a pattern worthy of distinction. Each recipient was nominated by one of the 13 chapters.
The following are the 2011 AIANYS Honor Award recipients:

| AIANYS Member Receives AIA Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture
This year's AIA Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture honors Alexander Cooper, FAIA, an urban designer who has reshaped many of the most iconic public spaces in New York City. Cooper is receiving this award for demonstrating a commitment to quality design that recognizes public buildings as part of the nation's cultural heritage.
The Thomas Jefferson Awards for Public Architecture recognize achievements in three categories: private-sector architects with a record of excellence in the design of public facilities, public-sector architects who promote design excellence within their agencies, and public officials or other individuals who have furthered public awareness of design excellence.
As the head of Cooper, Robertson & Partners, the New York-based firm he co-founded in 1979, Cooper has been instrumental in the development of virtually all of New York City's most revered public spaces, from Battery Park City and Ground Zero to 42nd St. and Lincoln Center.

New Law Change Allows Past Non-Licensee Ownership in a Design Professional Corporation
Prior to January 1, 2012, the ownership of registered limited liability partnerships (RLLP), professional service limited liability companies (PLLC), and professional service corporations (PC) in New York has been restricted to design professionals licensed and registered pursuant to the New York State Education Law. Specifically these professions include architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, and land surveying.
However, as of January 1, 2012, chapter 550 of the Laws of 2011 amends the Business Corporation Law and the Education Law to authorize a new type of professional service corporation to be known as a "design professional service corporation", or "D.P.C." Unlike existing business structures, design professional service corporations will have the flexibility of offering an ownership interest in the corporation to non-licensees. Chapter 550 also requires that greater than 75% of the stock be owned by design professionals, that greater than 75% of the directors and officers be licensed and registered design professionals, and that the largest single shareholder be a licensed and registered design professional or, with certain restrictions as discussed in item 6 below, an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The president, chief executive officer and the chair of the board of directors also must be licensed and registered design professionals.
Please note: The ownership of RLLP's, PLLC's, and PC's providing architecture, landscape architecture, engineering and/or land surveying services will still be restricted to those who are licensed and registered in the profession(s) of architecture, landscape architecture, engineering and land surveying. In order to allow non-licensees to have an ownership interest, a D.P.C. must be formed.
For further information on D.P.C.'s, go to: http://www.op.nysed.gov/corp/pcorpdpc.htm.
