2010 AIANYS/ASLA Convention-Early Bird Registration is Still Open!

 
     Early bird registration is still open for the 2010 AIANYS/ASLA New York Upstate Chapter convention! It will close on September 30th. After that date, you will be charged an extra $50. The convention will be held October 14-16, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center

     At this year's convention, there are over 60 continuing education programs to choose from. They are divided into four core learning areas: Building Performance, Design, Leadership and Practice, as well as sessions for landscape architects. You have the option of taking 1, 2 or 3 hour programs. This year, you have the chance to take classes organized by AIANYS, ASLA and USGBC.

     There are also 6 tours of historical landmarks in and around Buffalo. You have the opportunity to tour various spaces inside and out including Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin Martin House Complex and Buffalo Academy for Visual Arts and City Honors School for the Performing Arts.

     The Annual Meeting where the officers and Regional Director will be elected is scheduled for Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 8:30 AM.

     Visit the Product Showcase on Friday, October 15 and keep up to date with the latest products and services in the industry. Get your passport stamped at the participating booths and you will have a chance to win several great prizes including an IPod or a full registration to the Tri-State Convention (AIA New York State, AIA Pennsylvania, AIA New Jersey joint convention) next year in Atlantic City!

     Online registration will close on October 8, 2010. After that date, you will have to register in person at the convention center in Buffalo. Once again, the registration desk will be open Wednesday, October 14th from 4 PM to 6 PM.

     When you register online, you receive instant confirmation of your registration. Be sure to print out your schedule online and bring it with you to convention as schedules will not be provided at convention.

ARE Structural Systems Short Course Offered at the AIANYS/ASLA Convention

 

     The ARE Structural Systems Short Course is being offered during the AIANYS/ASLA Convention on Saturday, October 16 from 8 AM to 12 PM. The cost is $30. You do not have to register for the convention to take this course!

     One quarter of the four hour Structural Systems course will include a brief overview of the ARE Structural Systems Exam, a review of the NCARB Structural Division Statement, a review of the NCARB tested competency areas over which the ARE candidate will be evaluated.

     Three quarters of the course will be dedicated to problem solving with the instructor in which the attendees will learn how to categorize problems based on the evaluated competency areas, identify what is being asked to solve, start the problem, identify why incorrect answers are incorrect. Bring your questions, pencils and calculators. The presenter is Marc Mitalski from PREPARE.

2010 AIANYS Honor Award Recipients

 

     The Honor Awards program was instituted to provide appropriate recognition to individuals who have influenced the profession of architecture in New York State. These awards reflect notable contributions, outstanding service, or specific actions taken by architects or organizations who demonstrate a pattern worthy of distinction. Each recipient was nominated by one of the 13 chapters. The following are the 2010 AIANYS Honor Award recipients:

     The awards will be given out during the three keynote sessions at the convention in October in Buffalo.

     On Thursday, October 14 the Matthew W. Del Gaudio Service Award and President's Award will be given out during the keynote session.
     On Friday, October 15, the Firm of the Year Award will be given out at the keynote session and the James William Kideney Gold Medal will be given out during the 2010 Design Awards Presentation.
     On Saturday, October 16, the Educator of the Year and Honorary AIANYS Members, as well as the AIANYS Student Awards will be given out during the keynote session.

2011 Officer and Regional Director Candidates

 
     The AIANYS Nominating Committee met in July via conference call. Each of the following candidates was found to have met the qualifications for nomination. AIANYS delegates will elect the officers at the Annual Meeting during the AIANYS/ASLA convention on Thursday morning, October 14, 2010.

Robert Stanziale, AIA will serve as Treasurer (two-year term) and David. L. Businelli, RA, AIA will serve as President in 2011.

     The Regional Director Nominating Committee met via a conference call in July. The AIANYS Regional Director Nominating Committee has announced the candidate who met the qualifications to run for the New York Regional Director to the AIA Board: Frank Murdock Pitts, AIA, FACHA, OAA, AIA Eastern New York.

Two Bills Supported by AIANYS Became Law

 

     Governor Paterson signed two bills into law recently.

-A8011 Hoyt: Establishes the "state smart growth public infrastructure policy act."

-S7556 Valesky: Clarifies the application of the tax credit for rehabilitation of historic properties and historic homes and makes permanent certain provisions of the tax law regarding the credit.

     Edward Farrell, Executive Director, noted, "Both of these bills were part of our 2010 Legislative Program. Over the past few years we have been successful in advancing portions of our legislative agenda. I commend those members who participate in our Lobby Day and for their advocacy efforts in their respective legislative districts. It makes a difference."

First ENYA Merit Award-Deadline to Enter is October15, 2010

 

     AIA New York and the Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Committee are proud to announce the first annual ENYA Merit Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize the significant contributions of members, at an early stage of their career, to the AIA New York Chapter and to congratulate them on achieving licensure. Awards are not based on financial need, as much as they are based on contributions the intern has made to their profession, their community and the AIA New York Chapter. Eligibility Requirements: Licensed Architects from 2008 till present.

     By donating to the NYS Architects Political Action Committee (NYSAPAC), you have helped to fund the opportunity for AIANYS to support events in September: Andrew Cuomo for Governor event attended by Edward Farrell, Executive Director, Eric Goshow, AIA, VP of Government Advocacy and George Miller, FAIA, President of AIA and the Committee to Elect Susan Savage for Senate was attended by Edward Farrell.

AIA Accepting Submissions for Design for Decades Initiative

 

     In an effort to spotlight outstanding global architectural projects, AIA is currently accepting submissions for the Design for Decades initiative.  Projects will be displayed online in a virtual exhibition; selected projects can also be featured in venues such as AIA Headquarters, the 2011 National Convention and local chapters. 

     The purpose of this undertaking is to feature works of all scales and types that represent the scope and quality of work being done by AIA members.  Entries including small, large, commercial, residential, public, private, interiors, historic preservation, engineering, landscape and urban design projects will be accepted.  Ultimately, this will highlight the excellent work done by AIA members and promote the value of design. 

     Rick Bell, FAIA, Executive Director and the staff at AIA New York helped lead and support this national initiative.

     Design for Decades is open to all AIA members including associate, international associate and allied members.

     The entry fee is $25 and can be paid online.  Each project requires a separate and complete submission and fee, with a limit of four per member or firm.

     The Design for Decades site is on www.aia.org. Deadline for submissions is October 27, 2010.

AIA's New Official Magazine to Debut in January

 

     As a member of AIA you may have recently received a subscription renewal notice for Architectural Record in the mail. Please be aware that you will continue to receive Architectural Record through December 2010, which marks the conclusion of the agreement between the AIA and McGraw-Hill.

     Beginning January 2011, ARCHITECT magazine, published by Hanley Wood, will be the official magazine of the AIA. Members will receive ARCHITECT, as well as three other Hanley Wood magazines as a benefit of membership. The magazines will include a special section specifically devoted to news and features about the AIA, its Components, members, and initiatives that are of interest to AIA members. However, if the renewal offer is of value to you, members may want to continue subscribing to Architectural Record in 2011.

     Below is a list of the key changes to the publication subscription options available to members beginning in January 2011:

     -No additional cost to members to subscribe to ARCHITECT magazine (the dues invoice will reflect the subscription amount as was done with Architectural Record)

     -New! Both print and digital editions of ARCHITECT will be sent to members (they can select to receive both versions or just the digital edition only)

     -Digital editions of the other Hanley Wood publications: residential architect; ecoHome; and Eco-Structure will also be available to members for downloading via a link within AIArchitect)

     -New! Beginning in 2011, members may designate that their print edition of ARCHITECT magazine be sent to a different individual (some offices receive multiple copies and members expressed an interest in being able to send their copy to a local school of architecture)

     -There will now be no cost to Emeritus members for annual subscriptions.

     -ARCHITECT magazine will include articles that are available for continuing education credit, so members will not have to miss one opportunity.

Innovation Conference in New York City October 6-7, 2010 mcgraw hill

 

     Go to Architectural Record and GreenSource's eighth annual Innovation Conference taking place October 6-7, 2010 at The McGraw-Hill Companies headquarters in New York City. This year's theme is "Big and Super-Green: From Buildings to Cityscapes" and will focus on technical developments and strategies, from large-scale super-green buildings up to the super-green cities that support them. Two Openings on State Board for Architecture

 

     The Department is actively soliciting nominations for individuals interested in appointment as a professional or public member of the State Board for Architecture. Professional members must be licensed in Architecture. The Board is also conducting a search for a public member. Public members must be consumers of architectural services and may not hold interests in the organization, financing, or delivery of architectural services. These are both 5 year appointments. New Aging Conference October 1-2, 2010

 

     The New Aging Conference, an international conference on aging and architecture, will be held at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on October 1 and 2, 2010. The conference is the first of its kind, a call to action for designers to work directly with researchers, scientists, care providers, insurers and politicians to conceive new solutions for the world's aging population to live their lives more harmoniously in suitable environments. Speakers include: Juergen Mayer H., Charles Renfro, Diller Scofidio & Renfro and Joel Sanders.

     Thomas Balsley, FASLA will present the George J. Albrecht Memorial Lecture on October 20, 2010 at 4 PM at Marshall Hall Auditorium, SUNY-College of Environmental Science and Forestry, 1 Forestry Drive, Syracuse. This lecture is free and no registration is required!
