AIANYS/ASLA Convention October 14-16, 2010 in Buffalo
AIA New York State and American Society of Landscape Architects-New York Upstate Chapter are holding a joint convention October 14-16, 2010 at the Hyatt Hotel and the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center in Buffalo, New York. The convention will feature a trade show, continuing education programs, tours of historical landmarks, as well as Buffalo's acclaimed parks and local neighborhoods and evening social events. The keynote speaker at the Saturday Keynote Luncheon on October 16, 2010 will be Louis L. Marines. He is the founder of the Advanced Management Institute for Architecture and Engineering, a business unit of FMI Corporation. AMI provides executive education in leadership and management skills for the design profession. Education is delivered through customized programs for firms and associations. Lou served as co-leader of the 2009-2010 AEC Futures Research project, a program to look at the future of the industry through 2020, and to create practical tools for use by consulting design firms in strategic and scenario planning. He recently developed a leadership program for CMAA (Construction Management Association of America), and was a key participant in creating the American Council of Engineering Companies' executive development program for engineers and architects, the Senior Executives Institute. For the American Institute of Architect's 50 largest firms (the AIA Large Firm Roundtable), AMI created and leads a shared corporate university focused on developing their project leaders. Lou's book on leadership in the design industry, The Language of Leadership, was published in March 2010. From 1984 through 1989, Lou was the Chief Executive Officer and Board Member of the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC. Many Thanks to the Sponsors of the 2010 Convention: Prosurance Redeker Group Ltd, Watts Architecture & Engineering, Hubbell Galvanizing, Tremco and Unilock, Inc. | Call for Nominations for AIANYS Officers and Regional Director
One of the most important functions of a local chapter is its participation in the AIA New York State's nomination process. Each year, the Nominating Committee requests chapters to consider the names of qualified individuals for the following AIANYS offices: President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer (elected in odd number years for a two year term), Vice President of Government Advocacy,Vice President of Public Advocacy, and Associate Member Director (elected in odd number years for a two year term). Nominations are due by July 11, 2010. Elections are held at Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the AIANYS convention.
AIANYS Officers The following offices will be filled with a one year term in 2011: President-Elect, Secretary, Vice President, Government Advocacy and Vice President, Public Advocacy. (The AIANYS Treasurer and Associate Member Director will be serving the second year of a two year term in 2011). With the exceptions of the President-Elect and the Treasurer, officers may be eligible for re-election the following year for the same office for a maximum of two consecutive terms. All elected Officers take office at the inaugural meeting of the board in January.
Eligibility, Nominations and Nomination Form Candidates for the Office of President-Elect must be members in good standing. Candidates for Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, Government Advocacy and Vice President, Public Advocacy must be members in good standing and be either currently serving or past members of the Board of Directors of AIANYS. Candidates must also be in compliance with the resident status of the AIANYS bylaws. (Article 5, Section 5.02) A Chapter may nominate candidates for only one office or Associate Member Director in any given year. Nominations of Officers shall be made by the candidates' chapter.
Nomination Forms Nomination forms have already been sent to the chapters and are due by the close of business on or before July 11, 2010 at the AIANYS Office accompanied by a brief statement of qualifications from the Chapter. Please be sure the form is signed both by the Chapter Secretary and President. Please send to: AIANYS, 52 South Pearl Street, Albany, NY 12207. Candidates must send to AIANYS, a photo and brief "Statement of Philosophy" about why he/she would like to serve in the position. These must be sent to AIANYS on or before July 30, 2010. Candidates may send hard copy of the photo and the Statement of Philosophy, but must also send each digitally via e-mail to Stephanie Quirini at squirini@aianys.org -- photo in JPEG format or TIFF and the Statement as a Word document. A maximum of no more than two "elected" officers on the Executive Committee may serve from the same Chapter in any given year. Officers are President-Elect, Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer. For example, if a Chapter has a person in the President Elect position, it would be allowed to nominate a candidate for office, who will serve in the same year that the President-Elect assumes the Presidency. This provision prevents any one Chapter from controlling the Executive Committee's elected Officers, and encourages broad participation from across the state. Please note that Regional Directors are Officers at Large and their election is provided for in Article 9 of the AIANYS Bylaws. From the AIANYS Rules of the Board - Article 5.03c AIA New York Regional Director Nomination information has previously been sent to the chapters for this position, currently filled by Terrence O'Neal, AIA whose term will end on December 31, 2010. Refer to that nomination information and form for details related to the Regional Director position serving on the AIA National Board of Directors. If you have any questions, please contact Edward Farrell, Executive Director, AIANYS at 518.449.3334 or email efarrell@aianys.org, or in his absence Georgi Ann Bailey at

2010 AIANYS Honor Awards
The AIANYS Honor Awards program was instituted to provide appropriate recognition to individuals who have influenced the profession of architecture in New York State. These awards reflect notable contributions, outstanding service, or specific actions taken by architects, legislators, or organizations who demonstrate a pattern worthy of distinction. Specific awards recognize outstanding contributions to the profession in education, industry or government. Receiving an honor award is one of the best ways to acknowledge a member of AIANYS for their hard work and dedication to the profession. Members of the AIANYS Board of Directors or an AIANYS component may nominate eligible individuals per the AIANYS Award description. For a description of all of the awards, go to: http://www.aianys.org/awards/honor_guidelines.html.
For the first time, AIANYS has put together a checklist to assist with preparing the nomination process. Be sure to include it with your nomination, along with a CD that contains the documents in the nominee portfolio. All nominations must be received at AIANYS by the close of business (5:00 PM) on August 9, 2010 and sent to AIANYS, 52 South Pearl Street, Third Floor, Albany, NY 12207. New this year the Honor Awards will be given out during the Keynote sessions at the 2010 AIANYS/ASLA Convention in Buffalo October 14-16.

Are You In Need of CE Credit? Although sustainability has been a focus of architectural practice - and of the AIA - for more than 30 years, the need and opportunities have never been greater for architects to lead society towards a more sustainable built environment. The new education requirement was added beginning with the 2009 calendar year, to ensure that all AIA architects are not only knowledgeable about sustainable design (SD), but also prepared to meeting burgeoning client demand for it. The requirement itself is modest. Each active architect member must earn four learning unit (LU) hours of SD education each calendar year. This field now offers an immense choice of courses that help architects to stay current in their profession and ahead of the demand curve. You might not know how quickly and easily you can earn the required four SD LUs, which also count toward the annual health, safety, and welfare (HSW) requirement. Some SD-qualifying courses are even accessible on-demand, from the comfort of your own home or office. One of these convenient options may be right for you.
Complete your SD requirement right now for free: Four free online sessions from the 2009 AIA Convention remain available on demand.
View brand-new SD sessions from the 2010 AIA Convention: Twenty new SD sessions (earning a combined total of 23.5 LU's) have just been posted-all of which also qualify for maintenance of LEED credentials.
Select courses from AIA Continuing Education System (CES) Providers: From the search engine at www.aia.org/education/findcourses, select "yes" under the "sustainable design" pull-down menu. You can customize your search even further by date, location, cost, and other options.
Check with your local and state components for more SD education resources, including courses that may be present soon near you.
Whichever option you choose, please don't delay. Your membership is important to us, and the grace period to apply LUs to the 2009 requirement ends on September 30, 2010. |
Barbara Nadel, FAIA Recently Testified Before Congress
Barbara Nadel, FAIA, principal of Barbara Nadel Architect, a New York City-based architectural and consulting firm testified before the House Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management and said a comprehensive security plan integrates design, technology, and operational measures, which are put in place by building owners. "There is no single design solution to providing physical security to facilities in the built environment," said Nadel. "Each building and site is different, and presents different security challenges." "A high-rise office building in suburban Arlington, Virginia, for example, may be subject to a different range of threats and vulnerabilities than a mid-rise office building in a medium sized Midwestern city or suburb," Nadel added. Building owners must have the flexibility to raise or lower security levels as needed, based on actionable intelligence and other factors. Customizing security strategies for each building and site allows a wiser use of limited resources and taxpayer dollars. "Design of building exteriors, windows, and glazing materials can contribute to building security, along with underground parking policies and site design," Nadel said. "In urban settings the goal is to mitigate risk," Nadel said. "Building security should prevent mass casualties, minimize injuries, protect assets, and enhance resilience. Owners, architects, and security experts can assess the risks and options most suitable and affordable for each facility, and develop design strategies to ensure an appropriate level of protection."
