2010 AIANYS/ASLA Convention, October 14-16, Buffalo, NY
Planning is underway for the AIANYS and ASLA-New York Upstate Chapter Convention in Buffalo, October 14 through 16. Here is the convention logo and below is the convention theme. Creating the Fabric of Our Culture As we enter a new decade, we have an opportunity to consider the culture in which we live and the role that architecture plays in creating it. A society's culture is composed of many elements: its arts, sciences, politics, and language are some examples. The built environment is one outward representation of these elements. As architects, landscape architects and creators of the built environment, we have the opportunity to both reflect on the current cultural inclinations and to shape those of the future. Our buildings and landscapes reflect our traditions as a society and indicate our future values. We come together. We practice in our own unique way. Yet whether our practice is small or large, urban or rural, our work represents our culture.
Whether our practice is based in the private or public realms, whether it is commercial, residential or institutional, and whether our focus in on historic preservation or contemporary design, our role as architects is to ensure the highest quality in the built environment. Through collaboration, reflection, leadership, stewardship and design excellence, we have the opportunity to shape the values of our culture for generations to come. This convention is an education outreach opportunity by the AIA New York State Foundation in conjunction with ASLA New York Upstate Chapter and AIA Buffalo/Western NY. |

Calling for Entries for the 2010 AIANYS Design Awards
AIA New York State has recognized outstanding works of architecture through the annual Design Awards Program since 1968. The purpose of the program is to celebrate achievements in design excellence by New York State architects, to generate greater public interest in architecture, and to honor architects, clients and consultants who work together to create and enhance our built environment. These awards honor works of architecture located anywhere in the world by AIA New York State members and works of architecture located only in New York State by other New York State registered architects completed since January 1, 2005. AIANYS is currently calling for entries for the 2010 Design Awards. A Call for Entries brochure, which includes the submission guidelines, registration form, checklist and photo release form is being mailed to every AIANYS member. Click here for the brochure. This year's categories are: Residential (Small Projects, less than 5,000 square feet, Large Projects, greater than 5,000 square feet), Institutional, Commercial/Industrial (Small Projects, less than 5,000 square feet, Large Projects, greater than 5,000 square feet), Urban Planning/Design, Historic Preservation, Adaptive Reuse, Interiors, International and Unbuilt (recognizes commissioned architectural design work by practicing emerging architects licensed 10 years or less, not yet built or complete). Once again, AIANYS is asking questions that must be answered about the project. This year there are five questions that need to be answered. They are the following:
What were you asked to do by the client? What were the agreed-upon goals of the project? How did the completed project address these goals? How did you address the design problem(s)? How does the architecture of your project affect the community?
A 500-word description of the project also needs to be included. The registration form and fee is due to the AIANYS office by April 26, 2010 (must be postmarked/registered online by this date). Portfolios, checklists and photo releases are due by May 26, 2010. The Design Award Jury will meet in June to decide the winners and the recipients will be notified soon after. AIA Westchester/Mid-Hudson Working With Yonkers Public School System Students on Design Club
By: Raymond Beeler, AIA AIANYS Board Member and AIAWMH Immediate Past President For the second year in a row, our Chapter is working with the Yonkers Public School System on a variety of programs starting in March. The after school enrichment course, named the Design Club by last year's kids, continues at the Martin Luther King Elementary School, starting this month. Seven sessions will be taught this year by volunteer architects from our chapter, April 8, 15, 22, 29 and May 6 running from 3:30 to 5:15 PM. The class will have about 20 kids from the 4th, 5th and 6th grades who sign up based on their interest in architecture and design. Each session will have a lead teacher and two to four assistants. A field trip to a building of architectural significance will cap off the program on May 13th. Other programs with the district, currently in the planning stages include: -Shadow an Architect Day taking place in April. This program gives juniors and seniors in the Saunders Technical High School Architecture program a chance to see what an architect's office and typical workday is like and to discuss a possible career in architecture. -2 Pre-K classes to take place at the end of March. In this new initiative, about 20 Pre-K kids will learn how math and geometry relate to design and architecture. -A presentation to one of the district's special education classes. AIA Westchester/Mid-Hudson is looking for volunteers for any or all of these programs. To sign up, please email myself at rbeeler@beelerarchitects.com or Valerie Brown, Hon. AIANYS, Executive Director, AIA Westchester/Mid-Hudson at aiawmh@optonline.net. We are looking forward to another very rewarding year working with these delightful kids. International Green Construction Code-First Version Now Released and Ready for Public Comment AIA, along with the International Code Council (ICC) and ASTM International, announced the formation of the Sustainable Building Technology Committee (SBTC) and charged it with creating an International Green Construction Code (IGCC). Since then, an enormous amount of time and effort on the part of the members and staff of all three organizations, as well as a broad range of stakeholder participants, resulted in the development of a draft IGCC. The AIA's participation assured that architects had, and will continue to have, a role in shaping a significant portion of the overall building code development effort - an effort that will prove to shape so much of what, and how, we design. Public Version 1.0 of the IGCC, has now been released and is now available for public comment. While this milestone brings us one step closer to completion, we cannot realize this goal without your participation. The IGCC is vital to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the natural and built environments. It is equally critical to ensure that economic and regulatory implications to our profession are not negatively affected. As architects, it rightly falls to us to meet the challenge, become involved, and help define the final version of the code. To that end, the AIA has developed a web form at www.aia.org/igcc where you can review and submit comments on Public Version 1.0 of the IGCC (and subsequent versions). The deadline to submit comments is May 7, 2010.
