AIANYS Lobby Day-April 20, 2010
 
     The 2010 Architects in Albany Lobby Day will be held on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. This is your chance to meet with your legislators one-on-one and discuss issues that are important to all architects. Registration will begin at 8:30 AM at the Hampton Inn, 25 Chapel Street. At 9 AM there will be a legislative briefing with Richard Leckerling, Esq., Hon. AIA, Legislative Counsel and Edward Farrell, Executive Director. Following the briefing, the chapters scheduled meetings with legislators will begin.
     To register for Architects in Albany Lobby Day, please contact your chapter. The legislative agenda will be posted soon on the AIANYS website www.aianys.org.
     To help prepare members for Lobby Day, AIANYS will once again be hosting a free webinar on Tuesday, April 13 at 11 AM. Attendees of Lobby Day are strongly encouraged to participate in the webinar to learn more about the AIANYS legislative program. Registration information for the webinar will soon be posted on the AIANYS website at www.aianys.org.
 
AIA 2010 Fellows Announced
 
     AIA elevated 134 architects to its prestigious College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession.
     Fellowship is conferred on architects with at least 10 years of membership in the AIA who have made significant contributions in the following areas: the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession; the standards of architectural education, training, and practice; the building industry through leadership in the AIA and other related professional organizations; advancement of living standards of people through an improved environment; and to society through significant public service.  They will be invested in the College of Fellows at the 2010 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition in Miami in June.

Election to Fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the architect as an individual, but also honors before the public and the profession a model architect who has made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level.

AIANYS Joins the Preservation League of New York State For Upper Floors Program
 
     The Preservation League of New York State will be presenting the program "Enhancing Main Street: Making Upper Floors Work Again" Friday, March 19 from 9 AM-3:30 PM at the Charles Wood Theater, 207 Glen Street, Glens Falls. The seminar is free, but is on a first-come, first-served basis. The registration deadline is March 15, 2010.

James Receives AIA Associates Award
 
     Darris W. James, Assoc. AIA, AIA New York, has received the 2010 AIA Associates Award. The award is the highest honor given to individual associate AIA members who best exemplify the highest qualities of leadership and have demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to their component or region's membership, in the community, in professional organizations, and/or in the design and construction industries.
     He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a Bachelor of Architecture degree.  James has worked at Gensler since graduating and is currently a senior associate. He has worked in the firm's Amsterdam and London offices and currently works in the New York office, focusing on the aviation practice area.
     James was one of the chief organizers of the 2006 AIA New York Emerging New York Architects international design ideas competition, which received the 2006 AIA National Program of the Year award.

AIANYS Board Member to Give Lecture on Louise Bethune in Buffalo
 
     Kelly Hayes McAlonie, AIA, AIANYS Vice President, Public Advocacy will be giving a lecture on Louise Blanchard Bethune, America's first woman architect on Wednesday, March 3 at 7 PM at the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, 25 Nottingham Court, Buffalo. Hayes McAlonie will discuss how Bethune became the first woman to join the AIA and how she designed Buffalo's Lafayette Hotel, the 74th Regiment Armory on Virginia Street and many of the city's school buildings.

AIA Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference
 
     The AIA Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference was held February 3-5, 2010 at the Grand Hyatt in Washington DC. The theme was Design as Inspiration, Engagement and Collaboration. The conference included workshops, regional meetings, a briefing on the 2010 AIA legislative issues, an introduction of the candidates for National Office, an open house at the Institute, a keynote address on building beloved communities by Puanani Burgess, Poet, Cultural Translator, Mediator and Lecturer from Honolulu and the Accent on Architecture Gala. There was also time allotted for Capitol Hill visits which gave members and staff the chance to meet with members of Congress to discuss federal issues. New York State was well represented with AIANYS and Chapter leadership, staff and members all attending the conference.
     Kermit Baker from AIA's Strategy & Business Development Department presented at Grassroots information from the monthly employment situation report released by the US Department of Labor showing how architecture firm payrolls have steadily declines since mid-2008. Go to http://www.aianys.org/2010%20Images/Arch%20Emp.ppt for the graph. This graph shows employment at architecture firms is down 23% from the high of the summer of 2008.
AIA Rochester Receives AIA Component Retention & Recruitment Award
 
     AIA announced that 37 components were picked in the drawing of the Component Rewards Program. AIA Rochester received a certificate frame for their efforts. They automatically received an entry into the drawing by reaching 96% architect retention and/or 83% associate retention and recruited members as of December 31, 2009. 
     Congratulations to AIA Rochester for retaining such a large percentage of their members and recruiting new members!

Join the Construction Contract Administration Knowledge Community!
 
     The Construction Contract Administration Knowledge Community (CCA) has been established to help AIA members better understand the issues, actions and resultant impact of the decisions required in this often neglected part of Project Delivery. The goal is to provide clear answers to issues of concern to the Institute's membership and share case studies and best practices. AIA hopes to provide guidance and direction in developing guidelines for new and evolving approaches to Project Delivery, as well as guidance in the continuing education of emerging young professionals.

2010 Brick In Architecture Awards Announce Call-For-Entries
 
     The Brick Industry Association is calling for entries for the 2010 Brick In Architecture Awards. The Brick in Architecture Awards showcase the best work in clay face and paving brick from architects across the country in the following categories: Commercial; Educational/ Schools; Health Care Facilities; House of Worship; Municipal /Government /Civic; Residential-Single Family; Residential-Multi-Family; Paving & Landscape Architecture.
     Best In Class winners will receive national recognition through a special Brick In Architecture insert in the November issue of Architectural Record!  Other winners will be listed in the insert as well as in Brick News Online.
