AIA St. Louis Looking for HABS Alums

AIA St. Louis is seeking alums of the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), the only New Deal program still in existence today.
HABS began during the Great Depression in cooperation with the AIA, the Department of the Interior and the Park Dept. It targeted unemployed architects, draftsmen, and photographers to make as complete a record as possible of "the rapidly disappearing examples of early architecture and historic structures throughout the country." This program was credited as "the first major step upon the part of the Federal Government toward the cataloging and preservation of historic structures." The first HABS survey work began in January of 1934 and later that year was formalized as a joint agreement with AIA and the Library of Congress. The collection is housed in the Library of Congress and is the most used collection there.
AIA St. Louis is building a database to see if there might be momentum to lobby for such a program again. If you are an alum of HABS, please contact Michelle Swatek at mswatek@aia-stlouis.org.
