2009 AIANYS Committees Report

The AIANYS committees worked hard in 2009 to assist in planning programs and supporting various AIANYS activities. Below is a brief synopsis of each committees work in 2009. These committees will be looking for new members in 2010. If you are interested in serving on a committee in 2010, please send an email to Heidi Benjamin at hbenjamin@aianys.org and she will send you a committee form. Thank you to all of our committee members for volunteering their time and helping to make 2009 a successful year!

The AIANYS Associates Standing Committee (ASC) was identified in the AIANYS Long Range Plan to: advance the goals and objectives of Associate Members of AIANYS, and address the specific needs of interns: work place, IDP, licensure requirements.
The following was accomplished by the committee in 2009:
-Monthly conference calls serving to open communication between the chapters and better address Associate issues.
-The programs below geared toward Associate Members were offered at 2009 MAINSTREETS Convention.  Podcasts of the programs will soon be posted on AIANYS website emerging professionals page, which is currently being updated.

-Facebook and Twitter Accounts were created posting events across NYS and important information relevant to our membership (see Membership Inclusiveness Standing Committee).
-Associate E-Newsletter has been periodically distributed sharing information about Grassroots, Convention, IDP Coordinators Conference, changes regarding the Intern Development Program and NCARB, and other relevant information (see Membership Inclusiveness Standing Committee).

Convention Steering Committee
Chair: Orlando T. Maione, AIA (Immediate Past President)
Rich Pospula, AIA; Tori Budgeon-Baker, AIA
Ex-officio: Burton L. Roslyn, AIA
The group's first responsibility was to approve the overall theme of the 2009 Convention, as well as the description. Additionally, they made recommendations for diverse marketing tools that included both printed and digital efforts.
This year's committee reviewed a wide range of responses to the Call For Presentations.  Their goal was to be sure to select sessions that would cover the core educational areas identified by AIA. They also reviewed suggestions for tours to be offered.  Along with the contributions from the related partner organizations, there were a total of 60 educational offerings during the two and one half day event.
The group selected both keynote luncheon speakers who both proved to be very popular.

Government Advocacy Committee
Chair: Michael Shilale, AIA (V.P., Government Advocacy)
Tim Boyland, AIA; David Pacheco, AIA; Frank M. Pitts, AIA; Robert Stanziale, AIA Stanley Stark, FAIA
The Government Advocacy Committee was hard at work in 2009 and the result was a successful legislative year for AIANYS. There are several bills that AIANYS has spent years supporting that were finally signed into law in 2009. The Historic Preservation Tax Credit provides a tax credit for rehabilitation of historic properties. The second signed into law is the Office of Professions Licensure, which authorizes the commissioner of education to impose a 15% surcharge on any professional fee imposed that is subject to deposit in the office of professions account. AIANYS supported this as the goal is to increase the Department's ability to curtail illegal practice. The third signed into law establishes the New York Main Street program to provide financial and technical assistance to help communities preserve and revitalize downtown business districts.
For the first time, AIANYS held a free Leadership Advocacy Training Webinar titled "How to Work with Legislators at the Capitol and at Home." This training was designed to provide members with more effective tools to use on Lobby Day.
Over 40 AIANYS members, representing 10 chapters, attended Lobby Day. This year also marked the return of the reception with legislators. The reception was very successful with over 30 legislators and their staff attending. AIANYS honored Senator David Valesky with the Legislator of the Year Award. Senator Valesky received the award for his sponsorship of the Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit.
Because of AIANYS members generous donations to the NYS Architects Political Action Committee (NYSAPAC), AIANYS leadership were able to attend numerous fundraising events for legislators throughout the year.

Membership Inclusiveness Committee
Chair: Shanntina Moore, Assoc. AIA (AIANYS Associate Director)
Daniel Edgell, AIA, (NAC Regional Associate Director); Julio Torres Santana (AIANYS Student Director); Thomas Penn (NCARB IDP Coordinator); Joseph Kosiorek (Young Architects Forum Liaison)
The 2009 Membership Inclusiveness Standing Committee addressed the following roles and responsibilities as identified in the AIANYS Long Range Plan:outreach to Young Architects Forum, minority member, students, educators, architects in government and non-traditional practitioners.  Develop programs in conjunction with local chapters to enhance and encourage membership in AIA. The committee began and continues to meet monthly via conference call to address membership services.
The following was accomplished in 2009:
-Facebook and Twitter accounts were created posting events across NYS and important information relevant to our membership.
-Associate E-Newsletter has been periodically distributed sharing information about Grassroots, Convention, IDP Coordinators Conference, changes regarding the Intern Development Program and NCARB, and other relevant as developed.
-Letters have been distributed notifying recent school of architecture graduates about the opportunity for complimentary AIA membership within the first 18 months of graduation and free attendance at AIA National Convention.

Planning, Budget & Finance Committee
Committee Chair: Frank M. Pitts, AIA (President-Elect)
Susan Chin, FAIA; Orlando T. Maione, AIA (Immediate Past President); Kelly Hayes McAlonie, AIA; John Notaro, AIA (Treasurer); Burton L. Roslyn, AIA (President);  Robert Stanziale, AIA
-and-
Personnel Committee

Chair: Frank M. Pitts, AIA, (President-Elect)
Orlando T. Maione, AIA, (Immediate Past President); Burton L. Roslyn, AIA, (President)
The Planning, Budget Finance and Personnel Committee had the following accomplishments in 2009:
-Acted as a sounding board for staff in assuring that 2009 operations stayed on revenue and expense targets; indeed that they would generate net revenue.
-Worked with staff to develop a balanced budget for 2010 that cuts operating costs in key areas allowing us to offset anticipated revenue decreases due to anticipated recession-related dues decreases.
-Assisted staff in the development of a retrospective program-based operations review of 2008 and 2009 operations so that indirect costs are properly allocated to operating programs allowing us to see, for the first time, the actual cost or net profits for program areas once staffing and indirect costs are properly allocated to individual program areas.
-Worked with staff to use the program-based budgeting tool in developing the 2010 budget.

Public Advocacy Committee
Chair: David Businelli, AIA (V.P., Public Advocacy)
Dmitriy Shenker, AIA; Alan Weinstein, AIA; Dirk Schneider, AIA
The Public Advocacy Committee had several meetings this past year through conference call to discuss viable advocacy initiatives. The committee decided to write and design a tri-fold advocacy brochure. The brochure would be distributed to the local chapters for use in their advocacy efforts. A draft of the brochure was written by committee members. The committee will now finalize the verbiage of the brochure and solicit bids for printing.

Student Award/Scholarship Committee
Chair: Dennis A. Andrejko, FAIA
Eva Growney, AIA; Orlando T. Maione, AIA, (Immediate Past President); John Notaro, AIA (Treasurer); Allen Rossignol, AIA
Each year the AIANYS Student Awards Program recognizes design excellence of our next generation of leaders and practitioners. Faculty from each accredited degree program within the state can nominate students for this award, a maximum $1,000 per school, recognizing a studio project or projects authored by students which embodies the spirit of the design theme and explores design in an exemplary fashion. The award is meant to be used toward the student's education expenses the following year.
This year, the theme was Green Building - Sustainable Design Exploration for a Small Scale Project Utilizing Local/Regional/Indigenous Materials. To help market the program, the committee wrote copy for and had professionally designed a poster that was distributed to all of the 10 architecture schools. Five students from three schools in their professional degree programs received awards.
As an extension of the committee, a Student Award Champion was identified for each school and served as a conduit and local resource for the program, and to reinforce the importance and value of this award effort.  Champions were all local architects and/or alumni/a of each school.
Students received their awards and were recognized at the Honor Awards and Student Awards Presentation during the MAINSTREETS Convention last September in Rochester. Congratulations to these students for their excellent design work!
Looking for Ideas for Continuing Education Programs? Resources Are Available and Easily Accessible to All AIANYS Chapters and Members

It is that time of year again that chapter committees, firms and members sit down and try to answer the question, what do we do for education programs for the upcoming year? There are several resources you might consider as part of your planning process for 2010.  It's never too early to plan, so now is the time to put them in place for next year.

Ask - Don't miss a chance obtain feedback or ask a question
Ask every chance you get what member interests are. For Chapters, it could be a simple questionnaire on an index card that asks the question:  What would you like to have us schedule?  Can you give
us a one or two descriptive sentence on what the session might look like?  The other way it could be done is to simply have a list of topics and an open ended option. AIA is now using Core Areas that consists of Building Performance, Design, Leadership and Practice.  Meetings are also always good resources for program ideas.  Pass the cards out at the beginning of the meeting and ask for them at the end. If you are doing a program, add it to the bottom of the evaluation form.
Take advantage of the meetings you attend in the course of a day. You may wish to ask the architect sitting next to you what programs they might have taken lately that has helped them on a specific design issue.  Two excellent resources for members are on the AIA website.  The first is Planning Your Continuing Education Curriculum that provides you with continuing education frameworks and select courses according to your interests.  The link is http://www.aia.org/education/ces/AIAS076194.  The second is the CES Survival Guide and Mandatory Continuing Education that will answer many
of the questions you have on AIA and NYS Continuing Education.  Both of these can be found at: http://www.aia.org/education/index.htm.

AIANYS Convention - Resource for CE Program Ideas
There are at least 30 different education seminars offered at the annual AIANYS Convention. In 2009, there were over 60 sessions provided by AIANYS and its partners.
While there is no guarantee the programs will be available to your Chapter or firm, if there is a session that is of interest please do ask for the contact person or presenter. The topics themselves could be added to your list as ideas for other sessions.  As part of the planning process for 2010 we will be asking each presenter if we can publish their session contact information and have it available to registrants. The 2010 Convention is in Buffalo October 14-16, 2010.  Plan now to attend and earn 12 LUs.

AIA Speaker and Core Area Database - Up-to-Date Information Easily Accessible
The online course directory sponsored by AIA has close to 1,000 different courses and seminars that are searchable by Course Title, Level, Core Area, Web Based Live or Web Based Pre-Recorded.  The course details have the provider name and contact information, the learning objectives, HSW or Not and the course developers. You can also see where the course has been given. While the database is a work in progress, it is tied into the AIA CES Provider Program so it is updated as sessions are approved by AIA.  The link to the database is: http://sparky.occe.ou.edu/ouaia/search/CourseSearch/index.cfm.
