2009 MAINSTREETS Convention-A Great Success!
 
     Thank you all for making the first-ever joint convention between AIA New York State, AIA Rochester, AGC of New York State, ACEC New York, NYS Society of Professional Engineers, NYS Association of Professional Land Surveyors and American Society of Landscape Architects, New York Chapters a success! Held September 24, 25, 26 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester, the convention featured over 60 seminars, 8 tours, a golf tournament, a large product showcase, 2 keynote luncheons, a joint session with all of the associations and 2 social evening events.
     Over 30 people participated in the golf tournament, sponsored by Prosurance Redeker Group that was held on Wednesday, September 23 at Ravenwood Golf Course in Rochester.
     The Opening Keynote Luncheon on Thursday featured keynote speaker Dennis M. Mullen, Chairman & CEO, designate, of Empire State Development.
     On Thursday afternoon, there was a joint session on the built environment where the leadership and members of all of the participating associations came together to discuss issues that affect everyone. This was a unique opportunity to discuss the built environment from all
perspectives. Lina Telese, Esq., Zetlin & De Chiara served as the moderator and the panel featured Burton Roslyn, AIA, President, AIANYS; Mark Breslin, Vice Chairman, AGC, New York State; Dr. James Yarmus, PE, PP, President, NYSSPE; Robert Radley, PE, Chairman, ACEC New York and Steve Boddecker, Vice President, NYSAPLS.
     The 2009 Product Showcase was held at the Riverside Convention Center on Thursday and Friday. Attendees had the chance to view the latest products and services in the industry from companies all over the country. There were several events that were held right in the center of the Product Showcase including a festive opening reception on Thursday and breakfast on Friday.      The most prestigious event of the convention, the President's Reception, Dinner and Design Awards Presentation, was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Thursday evening. This black tie-preferred event featured a cocktail reception, followed by a sit-down dinner and then the presentation of the Design Awards, which highlighted the incredible work architects are doing locally, nationally and internationally.
     All of the past presidents of AIANYS were recognized during the dinner as were the 2010 AIANYS officers, Associate Director and New York Regional Director who were elected during the Annual Meeting held that morning (see the list below).
     Burton Roslyn, AIA, President of AIANYS presented the 41 Design Awards with Charles Matta, FAIA, 2009 AIANYS Design Awards Jury Chair. The Best in New York State Award was given out at the end of the evening. The recipients are: Perkins Eastman Architects, Choi-Ropiha Architects, William Fellows Architects and Bresnan Architects for the TKTS Booth and Revitalization of Father Duffy Square in New York, New York. A full color piece featuring all of the Design Award recipients will be mailed out to all members later this fall. This event was sponsored by Zetlin & De Chiara.
     AIANYS presented the 2009 Honor Awards and the 2009 Student Awards on Friday night in the Dryden Theater (part of the George Eastman House complex). The Honor Awards were presented by Burton Roslyn, AIA, President of AIANYS. Dennis A. Andrejko, FAIA, New York Regional Director and Chair of the Student Awards Committee, presented the 2009 Student Awards.
     After the awards ceremony, guests had the opportunity to tour the George Eastman House and gallery and then join the party. Each guest received a disposable Kodak camera, courtesy of AIA Rochester.
The party included cocktails, passed hors d'oeuvres, pasta and carving stations and music and the chance to socialize and network in a relaxed setting.
     The closing luncheon, the Irving P. Marks Memorial Lecture, on Saturday, September 26 featured keynote speaker David Zach, one of the few professionally trained futurists on this planet. This event was sponsored by Poole Insurance and XL Insurance.
     At the luncheon, the AIANYS Convention trophy was passed from AIA Rochester to AIA Buffalo/Western New York, the host of next year's convention. The convention will be held October 14-16, 2010.
     During the MAINSTREETS Convention, a raffle was held to give away two full registrations to the 2010 convention in Buffalo. The winners of the raffle are: Jamie Williams, AIA and George Pearlman, AIA.

Join AIANYS and the New York City Bar for the 2nd Annual Building in the 21st Century Program November 20, 2009
 
     AIANYS and New York City Bar will hold the 2nd Annual Building in the 21st Century: Better, Cheaper, Faster & Sustainable on Friday, November 20, 2009 from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM (registration starts at 8:30 AM) at Albany Law School, 80 New Scotland Avenue.
     As the recession continues to impact the budgets of the State, its authorities, local governments, and school districts, there are opportunities to achieve substantial cost savings and efficiencies in our public capital programs.  With ever increasing deficits at all levels of government, these are opportunities we can no longer afford to pass up. What changes are needed to modernize the existing statutory and constitutional provisions for land use, public construction procurement, and public finance?  
     Please join us for a day of programs, speakers, and panels focusing on ways to increase the quality, value, speed, and sustainability of public construction programs across the Empire State. New Delivery Notification Process for 2010 AIA Membership Renewal Invoices
 
     AIA has made changes to their delivery notification process for the 2010 Membership Renewal Invoices. The following delivery process will be used for all 2010 membership renewal invoice notifications:
-All members' with email will receive an email notification on their 2010 Membership Invoice with the letter from the President and President-Elect. (Those members that have email addresses on file).
-All members' emailed will received a PURL (Personalized URL -Uniform Resource Locator) or personalized web page for their 2010 membership invoice.
-All members' will be mailed a one page renewal invoice with the letter from the President and President-Elect.
-Any members' email that is undeliverable will be tracked and logged to support outreach to those members to obtain updated email addresses.
-Any members' mailed notification that is return as undeliverable will be tracked and logged to support outreach to those members to obtain an updated mailing addresses.
-Invoices will be distributed initially to those members of chapters that have provided their "2010 Call for Dues."
 
Four New York State Chapters Receive AIA Component Retention & Recruitment Awards
 
     AIA announced that 51 components were picked in the first drawing of the 2009 Component Rewards Program. These components automatically received an entry into the drawing by reaching 96% architect retention and/or 83% associate retention as of September 25, 2009.  AIA Rochester, AIA Southern New York, and AIA Queens will all receive Resource Guides and AIA Bronx will receive an ARE Study Guide.
     Congratulations to these chapters for retaining such a large percentage of their members! The next AIA drawing will be held in November.
 
AIA Rochester and ACEC Rochester Complete First LEED-Certified Habitat for Humanity House in NYS
 
     AIA Rochester, ACEC Rochester and Flower City Habitat for Humanity celebrated the completion of the first LEED-certified Habitat for Humanity House in New York State. A ribbon cutting was held on September 26. Over 50 people attended the event including members of AIA Rochester, AIANYS, ACEC Rochester, Flower City Habitat for Humanity and the public. Attendees were able to tour the house and meet the new homeowner, Fredricka Washington and her daughter.
     The project, titled ACES2 House-Architects Collaborating with Engineers for Shelter, is located in the JOSANA neighborhood of Rochester. The LEED-certified features of this house include: water efficient plumbing fixtures, tankless water heating system, additional wall insulation including soy-based spray foam and exhaustive sorting and recycling of construction waste. The project received the 2009 AIANYS Community Development Award during the Honor Awards ceremony at the Dryden Theater on September 25. This is the second Habitat for Humanity House that this group built. The first one was completed in 2006. AIA New York's Emerging NY Architects Committee Announces International Ideas Competition
 
     The Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA), AIA New York Chapter, is holding the 4th biennial international ideas competition, High Bridge: Bronx, Building Cultural Infrastructure (HB:BX). This competition is open to all emerging professionals, including, but not limited to, architects, artists, engineers, landscape architects, urban designers, and planners who have completed their education at the undergraduate or graduate level within 10 years of the competition announcement (September 10, 2009). The registration deadline is November 18, 2009, and the submission deadline is January 18, 2010. An online gallery will feature all submitted design entries. In addition, cash prizes and inclusion in an exhibition and publication will be awarded to the winning designs.
     HB:BX is an open ideas competition to design an arts center that culturally reinforces the physical connection between the Manhattan and Bronx High Bridge communities of New York City. Working in cooperation with the arts organizations Artists Unite and the Bronx Museum of the Arts, ENYA means to draw awareness to the current efforts to restore and reopen the historic High Bridge. AIANYS Executive Director Attends AIA Buffalo/Western New York and AIA Central Annual Meetings
 
     Edward Farrell, Executive Director, attended both the AIA Central New York annual meeting and the AIA Buffalo/Western New York Chapter annual meeting in September where they elected their officers for 2010. Paul Herendeen, AIA was re-elected to a second term as President of AIA Buffalo/Western New York. Peter Sorber, AIA will serve as President of AIA Central New York.

Professional Licensing Registration Fee Increase
 
     The Governor approved legislation in August that authorized an increase of 15% in the professional licensing registration fees effective September 25, 2009. This legislation will help restore the ability of the Office of the Professions to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all New Yorkers.

International Green Construction Code Update
 
     A multidisciplinary team made up of architects, sustainability experts, civic officials, standards writers and code officials recently met to discuss the critical issues that will determine the International Green Construction Code and put together a draft. The purpose is to create a green construction code that focuses on adoptability issues for parts of the building process currently not covered by codes. Version 3 of the IGCC Draft has been posted on the green codes website. This will be the new base document for consideration of changes which will occur at the next Sustainable Building Technology Committee (SBTC) meeting on December 15-17, 2009 in Bonita Springs, FL. SBIC's Beyond Green High-Performance Building Awards-Deadline is October 30th!
 
     Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) is calling for entries for the 2009 Beyond Green High-Performance Building Awards. This program recognizes the initiatives that shape, inform and catalyze the high-performance building market, as well as the real-world application of high-performance design and construction practices. Entries must be received by SBIC by October 30, 2009. The application fee is $300 for SBIC members, $400 for members. 
     Award winners will be invited to present their projects on Capitol Hill in Washington DC in February 2010. Go to www.sbicouncil.org for more information.
New York City Regional Career and Technical Education Conference
 
     The 4th Annual New York City Regional Career and Technical Education Conference will be held on November 3, 2009 at Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Complex, 122 Amsterdam Ave. at 65th St., New York from 8 AM to 2:30 PM. Sponsored by the University of the State of NY State Education Department, Questar III CTE Resource Center and the NY Department of Education, this conference titled "Careers on the Rise: Health Care, Urban Transportation, Green Careers, Architecture and Construction," will focus on the latest trends in these industries, skills, knowledge and competencies needed by students entering the workforce and the impact of green technologies on education, future job opportunities and the economy.

Dean of University at Buffalo, School of Architecture to Speak at Public Policy Forum in Albany on November 17
 
     The Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government will be holding a public policy forum, Design Excellence + New Civic Architecture in New York, on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 from 10:30 AM - Noon.
     The featured speaker will be Brian Carter, Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, University at Buffalo. The respondent will be John C. Egan, Commissioner, New York State Office of General Services
     Dean Carter will discuss what he considers the inferior nature of public-building design in recent decades, arguing that impressive public structures can still be built within current budgets. In response, Commissioner Egan will add his perspective as a public official involved in overseeing the construction of major projects in New York State, including the Empire State Plaza (completed in 1978), the Albany International Airport terminal (completed in 1998) and others.
