DennisDennis A. Andrejko, FAIA, Candidate for AIA National Vice President

Dennis A. Andrejko, FAIA, AIA Buffalo/Western New York, is running for AIA Vice President. The elections for national office will be held during the AIA National Convention in San Francisco April 30-May 2. Below is his statement of philosophy and bio.
Our future relies on expanding opportunities for architects, interns, and students; and leveraging those strengths within a more agile, resilient, and efficient AIA. By providing effective communication, disseminating knowledge, augmenting education, and ensuring a strong advocacy agenda; we can enrich the built environment, achieve our 2030 goals, and create a sustainable future our communities deserve.
My vision for AIA's future is represented by core values embodied in three fundamental categories:
STEWARDSHIP - Enhancing the value of AIA membership and diverse individual needs; improving communication across all component and firm levels, sizes and types; and collaborating with allied organizations.
SUSTAINABILITY - Central to our profession: Developing methods and improving tools to make carbon neutrality and energy independence a reality; nurturing, mentoring - and learning from - emerging professionals and associates; and fully expanding and embracing inclusiveness.
SERVICE TO SOCIETY - Understanding we are the doctors of our environment, with the prescription for its health being the value of design, and asserting this power of design as the essential ingredient of healthy, livable communities.
We represent a vital and valuable profession, inextricably linked to a dynamic and distinguished history.  The AIA sesquicentennial benchmarked this rich legacy and worthy tradition, and inspires us to embark on a continued course of visionary leadership.
Architects face many challenges in our current economy; and proven AIA national leadership is essential in navigating and negotiating through this critical period. Advancing project delivery methods, fostering relationships between the academy and the profession, supporting small firms, and encouraging civic engagement and citizen architects must remain on our agenda. The AIA can continue to be the resource center and information clearinghouse, providing content based information for both the profession and community, demonstrating the value of our membership, and celebrating the relevance of our work.
Together, we can rise to these challenges and seize our opportunities - working and leading with a collaborative spirit and renewed commitment - as we journey into creating our legacy for the next 150 years.

AIANYS 2009 Architects in Albany Lobby Day

2009 Architects in Albany Lobby Day was held on March 24. The day began at the Hampton Inn with a continental breakfast followed by a legislative briefing from Rich Leckerling, Hon. AIA, Legislative Counsel and Edward Farrell, Executive Director. Following the briefing, the chapters went to their scheduled meetings with legislators. AIANYS leadership met with: Assemblyman Sam Hoyt, Senator Toby Ann Stavisky, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo, Assemblyman Robin Schimminger and the staffs of Assembly Majority Leader Ronald Canestrari, Senator David Valesky, Senator Antoine Thompson, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, Assemblywoman Deborah Glick and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver. Over 40 AIANYS members, representing 10 chapters, attended Lobby Day. This year also marked the return of the reception with legislators. It was held at the Legislative Office Building's South Terrace. The reception was very successful with over 30 legislators and their staff attending! Members had the chance to discuss issues that affect architects with their legislators in a relaxed setting.
Prior to Lobby Day, AIANYS held a free Leadership Advocacy Training Webinar on March 13 titled "How to Work with Legislators at the Capitol and at Home." This training was designed to provide members with more effective tools to use on Lobby Day. This is one of many outreach initiatives we have planned for 2009 in accordance with the Long Range Plan. This interactive live web seminar focused on three core areas:  meeting with legislators, the legal aspects of lobbying and the 2009 AIANYS legislative priorities. Burt Roslyn, AIA, President, was the moderator for the webinar.
It began with an overview by Rich Leckerling, Esq., Hon. AIA, Legislative Counsel and Edward Farrell, Executive Director and was followed by a discussion with Assemblyman Peter Lopez (127th Assembly District), Mike Kennerknecht, Chief of Staff for Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (126th Assembly District) and Dwight Evans, Chief of Staff for Senator Joseph Griffo (47th Senate District). They all discussed how to make the most out of a visit with a legislator, whether it is at lobby day or at the district office. They talked about the most effective ways to discuss the issues and the best ways to follow up. This was followed by a discussion with Rich and Ed on the 2009 AIANYS legislative priorities. Participants were also able to ask questions throughout the webinar.  If you weren't able to join the webinar, you can view it at http://stream.krm.com/mediasite/Viewer/Viewers/ViewerAudioOnly.aspx?mode=Default&peid=78b39532-e984-4b24-8217-cbe58bfc6b75&pid=ead770d0-5b72-4db5-8ad3-b1b3262e79bf&playerType=WM7#.
This webinar was funded by the AIA Government Affairs Assistance Grant for State Components AIANYS received, which provides matching funds to state components to assist with government advocacy efforts.

Senator Aubertine Appointed Chair of Legislative Commission on Rural Resources; Announces Plan for Upstate Economic Development

Senator Darrel J. Aubertine (D-Cape Vincent) has been named Chair of the New York State Legislative Commission on Rural Resources. He plans to transform the commission into an engine for substantive public policy initiatives for which the primary function is the economic revitalization of Upstate New York. The Commission will be dedicated to creating policies that will boost economic revitalization in rural communities throughout Upstate.
The commission will spearhead the research and drafting of legislation in five key areas.
1) Farm to Fork: Promoting programs which build bridges between our state's farmers and organizations, such as schools, colleges, nursing homes and correctional facilities.
2) Green Energy: Agriculture and rural New York can play a key role in the development of alternative energy technologies, manufacturing and production of wind, nuclear, hydropower, solar, biodiesel, cellulosic fuels including ethanol, and other clean energies.
3) Green Jobs/Green Partnerships: By developing incentives for companies which produce environmentally sustainable products to locate here in New York, working with local small businesses, and through partnerships with SUNY and private universities to advance these innovations, this Commission will work to bring manufacturing jobs back to Upstate.
4) Re-thinking Upstate Infrastructure: This includes maintaining and improving infrastructure for water, sewer, roads, and mass transit, as well as broadband Internet.
5) Rural Healthcare: Improving access to healthcare through programs to recruit more doctors to rural areas, telemedicine and increased awareness of programs available to maintain demand for specialized services.
The Legislative Commission on Rural Resources is a bi-partisan agency in the state Legislature charged with examining the impact of rural resources on the state's economy, reviewing existing laws/regulations as they relate to rural resources, assessing the effectiveness of programs designed to promote rural viability, recommending and sponsoring legislation and otherwise promoting activities that will enhance and protect rural resources.
