2008 AIANYS Convention a Great Success!

Thank you for making the 2008 AIANYS Convention a success! Held September 25-27 at the Crowne Plaza and Westchester County Center in White Plains, this year's convention featured 32 seminars, 8 tours, a large product showcase, 2 keynote luncheons and several social events.
On Thursday, the Opening Keynote Luncheon and Honor Awards Presentation was held in the ballroom at the Crowne Plaza. George H. Miller, FAIA gave an inspiring speech on "Transformations In Practice." Miller is a partner of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners Architects and was recently elected President-Elect of AIA. All of the past presidents of AIANYS in attendance were recognized during the luncheon, as were the newly-elected 2009 AIANYS officers and New York Regional Director. Afterwards, all of the Honor Awards were awarded including a surprise award for Terrence E. O'Neal, AIA. He received a President's Citation in recognition of his efforts in advancing the AIA 150 project and for promoting a policy of civic engagement.
Thursday afternoon was the Prosurance Cup Golf Tournament at Old Oaks Country Club in Purchase, NY. Guy Geier, FAIA, was the winner of the tournament. His name will be engraved on the golf tournament trophy, which is displayed in the state office. The golf outing was sponsored by Prosurance Redeker Group Ltd. and Victor O. Schinnerer & Company.
Thursday night, the Host Chapter Party was held at Lyndhurst in Tarrytown. Attendees toured the main house before joining the party under the tent by the carriage house. The party featured an impressive buffet, open bar and a large dance floor and band. The big hit of the night was the light-up yo-yos from AIA Westchester/Mid-Hudson which encouraged everyone to "practice, practice, practice."
Friday, all of the seminars and the Product Showcase were at the Westchester County Center. The Product Showcase featured over 85 vendors displaying their products and services. To see the 2008 Product Showcase Exhibitors, go to  http://www.aianys.org/conv_2008/exhibitors.htm

Two registrations to the 2009 AIANYS Convention in Rochester were raffled off during the Product Showcase. Gerald Goldstein, AIA and Timothy McCarthy, AIA were the winners. 20 students from Saunders High School in Yonkers attended convention on Friday. They met with Orlando Maione, President of AIANYS, as well as visited the Product Showcase, viewed the Design Award boards and also displayed their work at the County Center.
Friday night was the President's Reception, Dinner and Design Awards Presentation back at the Crowne Plaza. 50 Design Awards were given out during the ceremony. For the first time, a Best in New York State Award was given out, which was not revealed until that evening. BKSK Architects from New York City received the award for their design of the Queens Botanical Garden Visitor & Administration Center in Flushing. A full color piece featuring all of the Design Award recipients will be mailed out to all members this winter.
Saturday featured the Closing Keynote Luncheon and Student Awards Presentation. The keynote luncheon, the Iriving P. Marks Memorial Lecture, featured James Cramer, Hon. AIA, author of several books including "The Next Architect" and Chairman of the Greenway Group. He presented "Architecture Practice Crossroads 2008-2012." The AIANYS Student Award was also given out. This year's receipient is Michael John Bailie, a student at University at Buffalo.  During the luncheon, the convention trophy was passed from AIA Westchester/Mid-Hudson to AIA Rochester, the host of next year's convention.
The 2009 convention will be held September 24 through 26 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center and will be a joint event with: Associated General Contractors of New York State, New York State Society of Professional Engineers, ACEC New York, New York State Association of Professional Land Surveyors and New York State Council of Landscape Architects. Information on the 2009 Convention will be available soon on the AIANYS website.
During the convention, AIANYS held the PAC Chapter Challenge to benefit the PAC fund. In total, over $1,700 was raised. AIA Westchester/Mid-Hudson raised the most money! This money will go toward the PAC fund, which is used to solely support state candidates, not federal.
Special thanks to the AIA Westchester/Mid-Hudson Chapter Convention Committee, all of the volunteers, exhibitors, speakers and attendees for making this a great event!

As part of the review process, there is currently an open comment period where component leaders, committees, members and other stakeholder groups can submit revision suggestions for review and possible adoption. The comment period is open until November 14, 2008. The Board is scheduled to take final action on sunset recommendations during the December 2008 meeting. This is your opportunity to have direct input to the Board (and Board Advocacy Committee) on initiatives that will be reviewed.
