AIA to Hold Public Meeting as Part of Staten Island R/UDAT

The Regional/Urban Design Assistance Team (R/UDAT) of The American Institute of Architects is coming to Staten Island to do a comprehensive study of the waterfront areas. A town-hall style meeting, open to the public, will be held Tuesday, September 23 at 7 PM at the JCC on Manor Road.
The AIA Staten Island Chapter has been working on bringing a R/UDAT to Staten Island for over 12 years. The application was finally approved in the fall of 2007. Funding secured by Councilman James Oddo, the Borough President James Molinaro and the Staten Island Foundation, along with assistance from the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, helped bring the AIA to Staten Island. This will be the first R/UDAT in the New York City area.
"This endeavor is a grass roots project which is open to all residents and organizations and will include the opinions and desires of all groups and individuals who chose to participate. The proposals put forth will be from volunteer professionals from around the country who have no financial stake in the outcome, thereby resulting in the most honest and forthright solutions for the future of Staten Island's waterfront," said Marcus Marino, RA, AIA, President of AIA Staten Island.
For more information on the Staten Island R/UDAT, go to www.itsashorethingsi.com or contact Marcus Marino, President, AIA Staten Island at mm@architectmm.com.

Board of Regents to Meet on Proposed Amendment to the ARE

The Board of Regents will meet September 15-16 to discuss the proposed amendment of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE). The purpose of the proposed amendment is to align the New York State requirements for admission into the ARE with national standards and to modify the endorsement provisions to conform to current practice. The proposed amendment was discussed at the June 2008 meeting of the Board of Regents. A Notice of Proposed Rule Making concerning the proposed amendment was published in the State Register on June 18, 2008.
Recently, NCARB voted to allow applicants to take the ARE concurrently with experience gained in the Intern Development Program (IDP).  Currently, applicants for licensure in architecture enroll in the IDP to satisfy the experience requirement for licensure. The proposed amendment enables applicants to take the licensing examination upon completion of the requirements for admission to the examination while enrolled in the IDP.  In addition to the education requirements and passage of the ARE, applicants will still be required to complete the experience requirement prior to licensure. The proposed regulation also amends the endorsement requirements for applicants licensed in another jurisdiction prior to 1983 seeking to obtain licensure in New York State.  The proposed amendment only applies to architects licensed in another jurisdiction prior to 1983 who took only the professional examination in effect at that time.
The proposed amendment eliminates the requirement for these applicants to pass a practical examination satisfactory to the State Board for Architecture.  Instead, these candidates will need to present evidence to the State Board for Architecture of at least five years of satisfactory experience in the seven years immediately preceding the granting of a license in New York.  As an alternative to such experience, these endorsement applicants may continue to complete those parts of the licensing examination not previously passed.
AIANYS has written a letter to the Board of Regents in support of the proposal.
Greening Syracuse

Last fall, Syracuse was named the "Go Green Large City of the Year" at the Go Green Earth Summit. The mayor of Syracuse, Matt Driscoll, attributes receiving this title to the efforts of both the city administration and the Common Council to curtail City Hall's energy use and promote "green" building standards. The greening of Syracuse began with the development of the City's Comprehensive Plan 2025, the first citywide planning document produced since 1919. In 2005, Mayor Driscoll signed the Urban Environmental Accords, one of only 84 cities worldwide to commit to 21 initiatives to improve the environment.
Specific things that Syracuse has done to preserve energy include: replacing inefficient street lighting and traffic signals, retrofitting municipal buildings with energy efficient equipment, performing energy audits on major city facilities and implementing a city-wide energy management system to monitor and control energy use. The city has already achieved its goal of reducing energy usage by 20% and is on its way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 20% by 2010.
Sustainable Buildings Industry Council Awards Program

Sustainable Buildings Industry Council is holding their second annual Beyond Green High-Performance Building Awards Program. These awards recognize the initiatives that shape, inform and catalyze the market for high performance buildings, as well as real world application of high-performance design and construction practices. The awards have two categories: High-Performance Buildings and High-Performance Initiatives.
The deadline for entry is October 15, 2008. Award winners will be invited to present their projects in Washington DC in early 2009 in conjunction with a policy briefing on Capitol Hill. For more information, go to www.sbicouncil.org.
