Smart Growth ConferenceAIANYS Held Board Meeting and Planning Retreat

AIANYS held a board meeting and planning retreat June 18-20, 2008 at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs. During the board meeting on June 18, Robert Lopez, Executive Secretary, State Board of Architecture, came in to discuss several issues of concern including the NCARB 6 month rule.
Local component and state leaders attended the two day retreat led by facilitator Karen "KC" Harrison, Director, Component Support, AIA. The first day began with a presentation by Ron Kermani, a public relations consultant, who led a lively discussion on the right and wrong ways to deal with the media.
Next, the first part of the planning began with the group was broken up into four groups for a brainstorming session. The discussion centered around topics which arose from the responses of the survey AIA had sent to AIANYS leadership. Each group then reported on the key issues they identified. During lunch Russell Davidson, AIA, gave a presentation on the 2008 AIANYS Convention in White Plains.
In the afternoon, KC gave a summary of the environmental scan showing the latest issues and trends in the profession. A review of the 2006 AIANYS strategic plan then followed. Groups were then broken up into four core service areas: communications, membership/governance, education and government advocacy/public advocacy. This session was in a round robin format so groups could move on every half hour. Once completed, each group reported on their findings.
On Friday the 20th, four groups, one for each service area, developed 4 to 6 goals and ranked them by importance.  Each group gave a report, then the entire group voted on the four most important overall goals. This information will be used to write the 2009-2010 AIANYS strategic plan which will be finalized and released within the next few months. AIANYS would like to thank all of the attendees of the retreat and KC Harrison for all of their hard work!
