The American Institute of Architects is a more effective and respected organization than ever before. If elected First Vice President/President-Elect, I will work with you to advance our AIA to a new level, celebrating the merits of great design and sustainable architecture and catalyzing the resources necessary for the practice of tomorrow.
The Blueprint for America has celebrated the value of design. It has shown how architects, working with community leaders, can envision healthier and safer places, and can build more sustainable and livable communities. Our leadership must continue.
Our world is changing at an accelerating rate. The AIA must set the pace, as leaders and stewards for our neighborhoods and the environment. A more agile AIA can provide greater value to all our members, worldwide.
My goals, as AIA President, will be:
Knowledge:
- To encourage the sharing of knowledge across the Institute
- To reinforce the relationship between the academic and practice communities
- To strengthen the alignment between components and knowledge communities
- To develop the tools necessary for integrated practice and sustainable design, and research new materials and technology
Advocacy:
- To aggressively push toward our 2030 initiative by ongoing advocacy for sustainable design, energy conservation and carbon reduction
- To speak out for more affordable housing, improved schools and hospitals, comprehensive regional planning, and better public transportation and infrastructure
Community:
- To strongly support our associates, emerging professionals and small firm practitioners
- To increase our membership and support our components
- To expand outreach to like-minded organizations
Diversity and Inclusiveness:
- To realize greater diversity so our profession reflects the society we serve
The AIA has greatly enhanced my experience as an architect. I pledge to work with you to build the Institute into an even more highly respected organization, providing service to all our members and communicating to all the importance of architecture.

AIA Buffalo/Western New York Receives Grant for Architecture + Education Program
AIA Buffalo/ Western New York Education Team recently received a grant to support their 2008/2009 Architecture+Education partnership with the Buffalo Public Schools.
Architecture+Education (A+E) uses architecture as a tool for building understanding of the world around us. Approximately 500 students, age 4-18 attending Buffalo Public Schools, will create projects during the fall semester, that will be exhibited at CEPA Gallery in January of 2009. 20 architects will join with 20 classroom teachers to design and implement core-curriculum based explorations of architecture. The program was successfully piloted in 2007 with the support of Buffalo Schools Superintendent, Dr. James Williams.
Conceived as a way to utilize the ongoing Buffalo Joint Schools Construction project (more than 33 schools are being refurbished in about 6 years) as a learning and outreach tool for the Buffalo community at large, A+E specifically targets students and teachers at the schools undergoing major renovations. The confusing time of change can be transformed into an opportunity for learning, helping teachers and students to understand the reasons for changes and the potential for design to enhance daily environment.

President of AIA Buffalo/Western New York Receives 2008 AIA Young Architects Award
Kelly Hayes McAlonie, AIA, MRAIC, LEED-AP, President of AIA Buffalo/Western New York and an associate vice president with Cannon Design, has received the 2008 AIA Young Architects Award. This special honor is bestowed upon professionals licensed 10 years or fewer (regardless of their age), who have shown exceptional leadership and make significant contributions to the profession early in their careers.
Kelly has dedicated her career to design for education and improving learning environments for all ages. Upon graduation from the Technical University of Nova Scotia (now Dalhousie University), Hayes-McAlonie joined Leathers & Associates, a firm specializing in the design of children's environments and learning gardens. There she planned and designed more than 100 learning gardens for clients throughout the United States and abroad and co-authored a multidisciplinary architecture curriculum for grade-school children.
She joined Cannon Design's Education practice in 1998 as a planner for pre-K-12 and higher education clients. One of her projects, the Montante Cultural Center, received an AIA Honor Award for Interior Architecture. She also was instrumental in the development of Cannon Design Academy, a professional development program that the AIA honored with the 2006 IDP Firm of the Year Award. In 2006, Hayes-McAlonie received the Young Architect Award from AIA Buffalo/WNY Chapter. She was named as one of Business First of Buffalo, Forty Under 40, and is a member of Leadership Buffalo Class of 2007. Congratulations Kelly!
