Blessing of the Hounds...
Sunday, September 30, 2012 was a beautiful Fall day in Wayne for the Blessing of the Hounds and the 5th Sunday Worship. A record number of attendees enjoyed our hospitality and took part in the traditional outdoor blessing led by Reverend Ron Purser on the steps of Little Home Church. The wonderful parade of numerous riders and hounds were, once again, a great treat to see!

Pastor's message... Certain thinkers and theologians leave indelible impressions on our faith and understanding. As I have been working on sermons for this fall on the theme of 'what makes the Apostle Paul tick', I have read through a number of theologians' work. I am hoping to set the stage for our exploration and informed vote on ONA next June. We need to address this issue Biblical, Theological and human compassion. Here is one theologian who can help us reach our Christian goal; The Land of Narnia, a land of love, life and peace.
C.S. Lewis stands as the liberal evangelical, the eclectic mind, the theologian who was the evangelist and the evangelist who was the theologian. Both liberals and evangelicals claim him; sci-fi buffs read him; children (and adults) go to the land of Narnia with him; and theologians still pour over his writings. He once said, "Any amount of theology can now be smuggled into people's minds under cover of romance without their knowing it."
He was interested in presenting mere Christianity to his people. He said such things as, "One of the things Christians are disagreed about is the importance of their disagreements." He was more concerned with the fact of the atonement than with the theory of the atonement. He had a way at getting to the heart of a matter when the liberals and evangelicals were floating around the edge of a thing, circling it like a boatman with one oar.
He loved religion, books, life, people, and God. He had a knack at draining life to its dregs: his imagination took him to Mars; his yearly walks with J.R.R. Tolkien took him from Oxford to Dunster, "with a ragged sunset ahead of us lighting up the pools - very much like an illustration to Scott;" his job took him to Oxford where he became one of the greatest lecturers; and his love of Jesus finally took him to heaven on November 22, 1963, the day President Kennedy was assassinated.
He leaves behind a legacy of truth. Truth to be gleaned, to be admired, to be studied. Edmund Fuller hailed him as "the most imaginative and versatile of Christian apologists." Charles Moorman said, "He attacked popular skepticism with sophisticated Christianity." And critic Chad Walsh went so far as to say, "If Christianity revives in England and America...it will bear strong traces of the Gospel according to C.S. Lewis." He had a way of taking old words like glory, heaven, hell, guilt and redemption, and making them live once again to the point of fascination. I can see him now with his typical ruddy face, lighting his pipe with a sparkle in his eyes. "Humankind," he says, "has but the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited."
"There was a man sent from God..." (John 1:6)
October is a beautiful month to acknowledge the multicolored hopes, dreams and expressions of life.

This postcard announced the Blessing of the Hounds event held on Sunday, September 30 - where the colorful card also became a souvenir for some of the event's attendees.
Flyers promoting this event were also posted in the local post office and in online event calendars. The next postcard mailings will highlight our upcoming Church events throughout the Christmas season.
Also, let's all remember to welcome our new members, Matt and Kelly Hadfield of Wayne.

Activities...
A Book & A Prayer Book Club 4th Monday of every month 7 pm in the Parish Hall Next Book: Kisses from Katie by Katie J. Davis Next Meeting: Monday, October 22, 7 pm, Parish Hall Contact: Kathy Haben, 630.876.0620, khaben@att.net The LHC Book and a Prayer Club readers enjoyed a great discussion and fellowship, discussing the last book we read, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. In one word, it was unbelievable. This non-fiction, biography shows what hardships humans can endure and with God's help how they can overcome their past, and their sins and shortcomings, to turn their life around when they put their trust, and life, in God. Our next book is Kisses from Katie by Katie J. Davis. This is Katie's story chronicling how she went from an eighteen year-old, senior class president and homecoming queen from Nashville, Tennessee, to serving children in Uganda. At the time of writing the book, Katie had started an orphanage and has adopted 13 girls of her own. Please join us and feel free to bring a friend! Choir Practice
Come join us on Wednesday nights at 7 pm. There are lots of great anthems to learn. We could really use a few more sopranos and tenors. We will begin practicing our brand new Christmas Cantata, "A Night of Rejoicing" for choir, bells and orchestra starting October 17. If you would like to sing with us for that event please let me know at: lsdieffenbach@sbcglobal.net
Bell Choir
Calling all bell ringers. No experience needed. The Adult Bell Choir will play on October 21, with rehearsal on October 20 at 10:30 am. Please plan to come ring!
Children's Music
We have started to practice our singing and bell music in Sunday School this Fall. October 28 will be our first Sunday to sing and play.
CD Release
This summer I was a part of a recording project with Carl King (our next door neighbor and tenant). Rev. King put together a CD called "Hymns of Hope" which is now available for a cost of $15. Cash or checks should be made out to Carl King.
Gardening Angels
Thank you to angels, Kathleen Sullivan Kaska, Karen Hansen and Anne Bouchard for their hard work weeding and deadheading the LHC courtyard garden and yard on Friday, September 28. The Church grounds were all spruced up for the Blessing of the Hounds event on Sunday!
College Care is back!
We've packed up and moved our college students back to school so that means it's time to send out college care packages. The first packing day of the school year was held Sunday, October 21, after church. We anticipate needing about 15 of what ever treats you might like to provide. Drop them off in the church office by the scheduled and announced dates and we'll be sure they are included. The shipping costs are generously funded by the Brent Alex Memorial Fund. If you have any questions, contact Lori in the church office or Anne Bouchard, anne.bouchard1@gmail.com. Our young people love receiving these packages and knowing they are thought of by their church family!

Open and Affirming...
Congregational discussion: Sunday, October 14, 11 am
On September 9, we convened our first congregational discussion about the Open and Affirming (ONA) process. ONA involves antidiscrimination toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (LGBT) in all matters pertaining to church life and ministry. About 40 of us gathered in the Parish Hall to listen and discuss together. I presented the historical background of ONA, and provided handouts related to the original ONA resolution and frequently asked questions.
Many people contributed to the discussion. Some felt that this was a generational issue, that young people generally did not have any concerns about LGBT people. ONA was also referred to as a moral issue, a political (non-religious) issue, and a case of empathy. Ron was asked to preach about the relevant scriptural references (in the future). The UCC's history of diversity and valuing differences was mentioned as was the possibility that perhaps the ONA process puts a spotlight on a specific group which might not want that. Comments were made that symbols can make a difference; even a small sign can be meaningful.
Leigh Bechet summed up the ONA process well by stating that the movement is not about us, we know we aren't discriminatory. It is about others who don't know us. Others agreed that we could be more public about being accepting of everyone.
Our next discussion is scheduled for Sunday, October 14, at 10:45. Future topics include a theological/Biblical discussion, speakers from local ONA churches, same sex marriage, testimonials, ONA statements, and other issues as determined by the congregation.
