Rummage $ale time...
Your Rummage Sale chairpersons are pleased to announce the dates for the 2012 Annual LHC Rummage Sale. This year's sale will be held on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6. These dates are rapidly approaching, so we want to remind everyone to commence your Fall clean up/clear out! We will begin accepting all your old treasures at the church on Monday, September 24th. However, as in the past, if you need to drop your items off before this date, the Karwowski barn is available for storage immediately. Volunteer sign up sheets will be passed around at church. Please feel free to contact Cathy Price 630.587.0275 or Kathryn Karwowski (pictured) 630.584.6254 with any questions about our beloved community charity event. We're looking forward to a record year! |
Pastor's message... "I do not pretend to understand how the divine Creator influences the human child. I feel as if spiritual forces were pouring constantly from the infinite source which is never poorer for all it gives forth... Yet the influences of spirit make their way in different degrees or not at all, to different souls. The windows of some are perhaps nearly shut. The windows of others have opened only a few chinks and crevices. At some seasons - the season of prayer - those chinks and crevices may open a little wider so that a little more of God's light may enter in."
Martin Buber

These words from the great rabbi and 20th century philosopher got me to thinking about the seasons of change. Some of us mark the passing of the year by seasons. Some mark the year by climatic seasons, summer, fall, winter, spring. (remember the Native American woman on Howdy Doody?) Some mark the year by school events, the start, the breaks, the semesters, the summer vacation. Some mark the year by the seasons of the church year, Advent, Christmas, Ephiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentacost, Kingdomtide. I'm not sure how many really are in that category. Others mark the year by sporting seasons. We are entering football season (hooray!). Next is hockey, basketball, and then baseball again. Of course there is hunting, fishing, soccer and always golf and tennis. It is interesting how we measure our own years, our life.
Martin Buber suggests prayer, concerns of loving-kindness, and justice. He suggests we open the windows of our life to the winds of God's love and hope for the disenfranchised, the hopeless, the forgotten, the despairing. Could it be that loving, kindness, care, affirmation and acceptance actually defines every season no matter how we number them.
I would ask you to open the fall, football, playoff season with loving concern, compassionate thoughtfulness. May the color of the season and the winds that blow bring hope and life to you.

Born in 1917, Zamperini has traveled an extreme journey from his mischievous depression-era boyhood in California, to a Japanese prisoner of war camp; facing countless unfathomable obstacles and catastrophes in between. Presented by Rev. Nancy Schatzeder on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 7-8:30 pm in the Parish Hall.
We are currently studying The Book of Acts. Praying that the same spirit that inspired and initiated the new church in Jesus' name will continue to bless and vivify our study, we will take this early church history to heart. Study will continue throughout summer and into fall. So grab your actual or virtual bible (e-readers rule!), your open minds and hearts, and join us anytime. All are invited whether you have read the chapters to be discussed or not.

| Council News...
Moderator elect = Fox Valley Association Delegate
It was suggested by our Council, that the person holding the position of Moderator elect could also hold the position as our church's Delegate to the Fox Valley Association. What does this mean? Well, local UCC congregations, in our area, belong to the FVA and they meet twice yearly (Spring and Fall). There is also a once-a-year Illinois Conference meeting (Summer) that they would attend. Delegates from the conference are then chosen to attend the General Synod meetings, which meet every two years. In short, the governing bodies of the UCC (from the top down) are: * General Synod * Conference * Association
The upcoming meetings are:
* Fox Valley Association, Oct. 20, 2012 (no location assigned yet)
* Fox Valley Association, May 27, 2013 (Downers Grove, IL)
* Illinois Conference Meeting, June 14-15, 2013 (Oakbrook, IL)
Why am I telling you this? Besides having a delegate attend these meetings, clergy and visitors are welcome and invited. I'd LOVE to have someone attend the meetings with me. Please see me after church or call me at 630.816.7723 or email me at gregsasst@aquascapeinc.com if you're interested in joining me!
