Smiling faces at work...

Our thanks to everyone who worked so hard on the Peterson House, Saturday, April 14, to prepare the house for sale. The day was the first in a series of "Work Days" to be scheduled twice a month--one Saturday and one Monday, from 9 am to Noon.

The Progress: Anne Bouchard got an early start and scrubbed the refrigerator in the Peterson House mid week. Then Ann McLaughlin was on full attack Saturday, cleaning behind the kitchen stove. Jane Shelton and Jan Marchese, along with Susannah, Kate and Will Lesswing were seen up to their elbows cleaning everything in sight including the basement. Bob Kaska was up and down those basement steps hauling trash to the dumpster, while Wally Setlock removed stickers from the bedroom walls. Both Gary Estes and Wally painted a bedroom. And Kathleen and Bob Kaska took control over the garden-gone-wild along the south side of the yard.

Jan Marchese and Karen Hanson also pulled a few weeds and deadheaded roses in the Church garden. So if you had your head down and we missed you, we apologize for omitting your good deed. We do appreciate everything that was done!
"Work Days" are not just for the Peterson House. We will spruce up our church both inside and out, so bring your favorite gardening/shop tools, chain saw, or cleaning supplies to help for as long as you can. Even a half an hour of helpful hands will be appreciated!

Pastor's message...
I once read an account that happened in the early days of aeronautics. A plane landed at the airport in Kobar, India, in order to refuel. As the plane was being checked a large rat detected the smell of food on the plane and somehow managed to climb aboard. After the plane was airborne again the pilot heard the sickening sound of gnawing somewhere behind him. His first reaction was that some wire might be short-circuited and the plane would be an impending disaster. What could he do? As the pilot tried to calm himself the gnawing continued. Then on an impulse he reflected that a rat is not made for high altitudes. So the pilot determined to soar higher and higher. Finally he reached an altitude where his own breathing was severely impaired. He listened and to his great delight the gnawing sound had ceased. When the plane landed at its destination the rat was found dead in back of the cockpit.
A new climate spelled doom for the rat. The rat could not survive in this atmosphere of a higher level.
The climate change has played a huge role in the whole history of the animal kingdom. Remember the pictures of pre-historic monsters? The dinosaurs seemed like animals that only a nightmare could create. We are well aware of the fact that the climate changed and they died. They could not adjust to the new atmospheric conditions and so they faded out of the picture, not by direct attack, but by the slow process of new weather.
Now maybe there is a lesson for us to be learned today. There are ominous realities that threaten world peace and the Christian faith.
If dinosaurs became extinct by climate change, maybe climate change is needed in our Faith spirit. Approaches to hatred, prejudice, close-mindedness, separation, and rejection might well be handled with a new climate of love and acceptance of persons.
Scripture has something to say about this in Romans 12:21. "Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good." Okay, that is it. We battle evil with the climate of goodness. The Quakers had a motto: "It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness."
This means in a practical way the Church of Jesus Christ is not merely concerned about rooting out weeds; it is more concerned about planting flowers. We must believe the best way to fight evil is to serve the Lord. To do that we must love the Lord with all our heart, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself.
During springtime we get the itch to start working on our gardens. Some people have a lot of obnoxious weeds with which to contend. Well, it is sort of a losing battle. But you can fight it by simply planting more good. Accepting people for who they are and building a climate of love that affirms others rather than to cut them off. We are called to endeavor to develop a spirit of warmth, happiness and cooperation in the family circle and then slowly together begin to warm up in this new climate. The hardness and indifference begin to soften and the home or church starts to pulsate with a new life.
So let's lay aside our pea-shooters which haven't been very effective and pick up the Gospel, which is the power of God to change the climate so good can thrive, and together we can be open to each other and affirm the goodwill that we find. Let us change the climate from hatred to goodness.
Have a beautiful Spring!

Activities... A Book & A Prayer Book Club Come join us on the 4th Monday of every month at 7 pm in the Parish Hall. Next Book: Her Mother's Hope by Francine Rivers Next Meeting: Tuesday, May 29, 7 pm, Parish Hall (Note date change due to Memorial Day Holiday) Contact: Kathy Haben, 630.876.0620, khaben@att.net To celebrate Mother's Day the Book Club readers will be discussing "Her Mother's Hope" by Francine Rivers. Here is an overview of this Christian fiction book: The sweeping story explores the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters over several generations. Near the turn of the 20th century, fiery Marta leaves Switzerland determined to find life on her own terms. Her journey takes her through Europe and finally lands her with children and husband in tow in the central valley of California. Marta's experiences convince her that only the strong survive. Hildie, Marta's oldest daughter, has a heart to serve others, and her calling as a nurse gives her independence, if not the respect for her mother. Amid the drama of WWII, Hildie marries and begins a family of her own. She wants her daughter never to doubt her love-but the challenges of life conspire against her vow. Each woman is forced to confront her faulty but well-meaning desire to help her daughter find her God-given place in the world. Please join us for prayer, food, fun and fellowship...and bring a friend! Until then, relax with a good book; take time to contemplate the Word of God and the blessings bestowed upon you! Hope you enjoy your Mother's Day. Education...
Comparative Religions Series The lecture series on Comparative Religions was well-attended. We were fortunate to have had Pastor Ron, an expert on the subject, lead the studies. In January, Judaism was discussed, Christianity was covered in February, and in March, Islam was the subject. A great deal of information was presented and it was surprising to find out how knowledgeable many of the participants were. Attending the sessions was like taking a college course...fortunately without the final exam!
Morning Bible Study
Presented by Rev. Ron Purser on Wednesday mornings at 10 am in his office. The group continues to study the book of Genesis. All are welcome. No preparation is required.

Presented by Rev. Nancy Schatzeder on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 7-8:30 pm in the Parish Hall.
We completed our study of Mark in April (at least this time around - each gospel requires several readings to be truly appreciated). Reading it with others always furthers ones understanding of the growing context for our scripture, so many thanks for all who attended. We will begin our next round of study with The Book of Acts. It is a close to a history book on the new church and its response to life without the physicality of Jesus. Let's start at the beginning and read, as you are able, to Chapter 8:1. We will be studying Acts for at least five sessions. All are invited whether you have read the chapters to be discussed or not. Simply bring a bible (or borrow one of ours) and your open and inquistive mind, and together we'll make it happen. All are welcome. No preparation is required. Email Nancy for more information:
Children's Sunday School
Meets each Sunday in the Guild House. Children will be called during the service when it is time to join their teachers. All children, preschool age through 8th grade, are welcome.

Congregational Life Ministry
Got Talent? On the evening of April 21 over 20 performers took to the Parish Hall stage (and the area in front of the stage) to resoundingly affirm that, "Yes, the Little Home Church GOT TALENT!!" Musical acts were the most plentiful, supplemented with stop-motion animation, dance and gymnastics. The free flowing family-friendly filler provided by Master of Ceremonies, Gary Stevenson, kept smiles on everyone's faces in between acts. An idea to enhance our concession stand for next year has already resulted in a volunteer to be the concession chairperson! Dust off your tap shoes: this is your first call to start practicing for Got Talent '13 - 'Home' grown!

| Council news...
Exploratory Committee Formed to Consider ONA
Several Church Council members have formed an exploratory committee to consider the Open and Affirming Covenant presented to the entire UCC denomination in 1986. The Open and Affirming Covenant (ONA for short) specifically focuses on encouraging inclusiveness and eliminating discrimination based on someone's sexual orientation. Congregations typically take a year or two to study and discuss adopting their own covenant. The committee chair is Anne Bouchard and committee members are Carol Berger, Nancy Doerr, Kathy Haben, Ann McLaughlin, Marilyn Poole, Nancy Schatzeder and Suzanne & Wally Setlock. Rev. Ron also attends meetings as much as possible. The committee is hoping to make a determination and recommendation about ONA to the full council by the Junal meeting. Feel free to contact any member of the committee for more information.

noticed!
Our gardens look great! Thanks to Kathleen Kaska for organizing the activities of the Gardening Angels and Handy Devils to spruce up our courtyard for the Spring. If you noticed the extra brightness in the Sanctuary, thank Mike Prang and Anne Bouchard for changing light bulbs and washing all the globes on the chandeliers. Mike and Anne, along with Jan and Gianna Marchese also cleaned out the cobwebs from the corners in the sanctuary and narthex. Thank you Kathi Abell for creating the glorious altar arrangement of all the Easter flowers. And finally, thank you to everyone who donated toilet paper, shampoo, toothpaste and brushes and other dental hygiene products. What a caring bunch we are! |
