Washburne on "Progressive Education": Preparing Our Students Today...for Tomorrow

Carleton Washburne is a pivotal character in The Winnetka Public Schools' story. He is known historically as long-time and highly influential superintendent (1919-1943), developer of the Winnetka Plan (an approach to schooling that required both mastery of content and social/emotional skill development), and president of the Progressive Education Association (1939-1943). His ideas and work were imitated and utilized extensively across the United States as the field of psychology emerged and demonstrated that learning occurs at the deepest levels when it is tied to important, real-life experiences for children.

One of the ways that Washburne shared his vision of education with parents was in his book What Is Progressive Education? With his expertise in this field, and the title of the book, one might expect a comprehensive definition, followed by a series of practices or philosophical guidelines that would serve as a beacon for parents and educators.

Instead, as you read this book (as all teachers new to Winnetka do!) you discover that progressive education is an ideal, one that is constantly changing and morphing as we incorporate the changing needs of students. "A child is a very complex organism. And no two children are alike. What experience is this particular child ready for? What are his needs? What is society demanding of him...How can he live most effectively as a child and develop most effectively as a person and as a contributing member of society...?" From an educator's point of view, as you might have guessed, these answers are not easy ones.

Math and World Language
Curricula Review Updates

At its October meeting, the Math Curriculum Review Committee compared the eight Standards for Mathematical Practice from the Common Core State Standards Initiative to the Process Standards from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000).

The team analyzed the new expectations of the Common Core by identifying:
  1. The big idea of each mathematical practice. (For a detailed description of the practices, click here.)
  2. Teachers' insights, which varied among primary, intermediate and middle school teachers.
  3. What surprised the committee.
  4. The connection between each standard and current practice.
This week, the Math Curriculum Review Committee is launching an online survey to collect parent feedback regarding their child's math experiences in Winnetka. The survey will remain open until November 18th. To take the survey, please click here.

Earlier this month, the World Language Review Team conducted four parent focus groups to further inform the program review. Results will be shared at the December Board meeting, when options for revising the World Language program will be presented.

The Skokie School Principal Search
Parent Focus Groups December 14, 2011

Thomas Eber, principal of The Skokie School, will be retiring at the end of this school year. The process of searching for a new principal has begun. Parent feedback is an important component of the search. There will be two opportunities for providing input: an online survey and focus groups.

The focus groups will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at 2:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. If you are interested in participating, please mark your calendar. The location and additional details will be sent to all District families and posted on the website. A link to the survey will be distributed via email next month.

Additional information about the search process will be presented at the Board meeting on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, and posted on the District site.
