Greetings!

The holiday season is here in full effect! As we all know, family will say what everyone else may be thinking but won't say out loud and the truth that their words may hold can make you say "hmmm".

My oldest sister, Dani, and her family traveled from North Carolina to Atlanta to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with us. A great time was had by all. Amidst the talking, laughing, eating and more eating an interesting topic arose.

This month, Natural Girls Rock would like pose a question. It's not one that needs to be answered immediately. Just think about it when you go hair product shopping or talk to your "curlfriends" about what makes their hair "do what it do".

.....And now, I will hand the mic over to Dani........

I have been attempting to go natural on and off since the 1980s. During the pre-internet years, it was difficult to find information on the best way to care for natural hair, especially if you lived in a rural area. Many of you have been through the cycle:  I would cut off my relaxed hair with enthusiasm, only to relax it again a few months later because I couldn't figure out how to make it look nice.  Gals who have the benefit of blogs and YouTube and online message boards can go natural with the confidence that there will be someone out there to help them every step of the way. I am very thankful for the plethora of information and hair products that are now readily available.  It is a boon to those of us who don't live near a large urban area with natural hair salons, and it has helped me finally go natural and stay that way for almost two years. However, the increasing accessibility to natural hair care advice comes with its own dangers.
To put it bluntly (as my sister, Kelly, says I am likely to do), every technique or product isn't for every head of hair. Although there are now products available that will coax soft beautiful curls out of what we were raised to believe was unmanageable hair, that doesn't mean those products will work for everyone. Hair care products are not miracles in a jar; they are just oil and fragrance and whatever else the company uses. You can't get mad at a company because the product doesn't make your hair look like that of the model because your neighbor may have perfect results from the same product. You also shouldn't spend a fortune chasing after some super product or routine that you think will make your hair do something it wasn't meant to do.
The key to being a happy natural girl is learning about YOUR particular head of hair.  For instance, one thing I've learned is that a twist-out makes my hair look like a tangled mess. No matter how many different ways I do it or how many different products I put in my hair before I twist, the result is never the same as what I've seen in magazines and videos. So I stopped trying. I do my hair in the styles that I know work for me; two-strand twists suit me well. I evaluate products based on whether the texture of my hair after application is better than before, not whether I got the same result as a certain model or celebrity spokesperson. I appreciate my hair for what it CAN do, not what I fantasize it should be able to do. And since I have learned to accept MY hair for what it is and what it isn't, I've found my "hair happy place" and I hope you do too.

So, here we are, the last month of the year...! Natural Girls Rock is busy, busy, busy!

This month, we hosted our first of many to come holiday parties and extravaganzas in Atlanta, Georgia. The purpose of the party was to bring together over 200 natural ladies to eat, shop, be merry, have a great time! These rockin' ladies also exhibited an amazing amount of sincere support for the 2 big chops we conducted at our Holiday Party & Extravaganza. We also filmed the first Natural Girls Rock commercial during the event! What a time we had!!

Also, we are excited to announce that Natural Girls Rock will be hosting a large "meet up" in Atlanta, GA on January 14, 2012. This is MLK weekend and would serve as the perfect getaway for a "Girls Weekend".

.....Lord, thank you for choosing me....! Continue to order my steps in the right direction in support of Natural Girls Rock.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Natural Girls Rock will be hosting a "Meet and Greet" mixer on Friday, April 27, 2011 (5pm - 10pm). Party will be open to 1000 people. NOTE: This is the weekend of the World Natural Hair Show.
